"I Never Dreamed of You"

Fear had formed her, and fear had led her to this moment. But exhilaration filled her thoughts, and satisfaction warmed her heart.

They walked side by side, staring at the golden-green light before them, yet not really seeing the effervescence. For years they had fought, side by side, sometimes with no light at all at the end of a tunnel of nightmares. But now, it was as if light no longer mattered. As they neared the portal, Korra closed her eyes slightly. She could feel Asami doing the same, though she did not know how.

I've known since I was a child that I was the Avatar. I thought I knew my destiny. I was born to keep balance in the world.

I knew I was supposed to save the world. But I never dreamed that I would need someone to save me.

I never dreamed of you.

For so long, she had fought her way alone. But so had Asami. A woman born into a world of power and money, yet tormented into dust by that same birthright.

I have known since I was a child that I would be rich. That I would have everything. But I never dreamed that I would want something more. I never knew to dream of you.

Asami's hand clenched involuntarily, but she didn't dare act. Not yet. It wasn't time.

The light of the spirit portal grew brighter, forcing both Korra and Asami to squint tighter. Before long, their eyes were closed, the brilliance of the unknown shining as the future enveloped the world around them. Asami didn't have to open her eyes to see the colors of her life. She could feel them in the heart beating beside her.

All I want...all I need...

Korra felt the light of the spirit portal as a hurricane upon her mind. When that light met her own, there was no turning back. Her eyes still closed, she whispered.

"All I want...all I need..."

Together, Korra and Asami linked their hands and stepped toward the swirling light, opening their eyes. The blinding light was secondary to the connected beating of their hearts, and it opened up a flame of passion that melted both women to the core of their souls.

As one, they turned, and their eyes met. There was nothing to say, nothing to do. Love spoke in a voice louder than any song, and the lights from the portal danced the words of their lives.

In a moment where time stood still, Korra and Asami held that gaze, wanting nothing, needing nothing. They would never be able to say how long they stood in that spot, looking in each other's eyes. The passion in their gazes were all they ever wished to see. Finally their lips met, spending an eternity within the flutter of wings, the barest of bushes. It was enough. More than enough. It was a promise.

"So...where do we go now?" Asami asked, the whisper of her breath soft on Korra's cheek as they drew slowly apart.

Korra embraced her, closing her eyes, her body melding into Asami's own. As the light began to take them, Korra's blue eyes sparkled, and a mischievous gleam lit her eyes.

"Where do we go? We can go anywhere. Everywhere you want."

Asami buried her face in Korra's shoulder. "I don't want to go everywhere. I don't want to go everywhere." She turned her face to Korra's neck and kissed her softly. "I don't want to go anywhere...Korra..."

Korra lifted her head and took Asami's chin between her fingers. Gently, she pressed their lips together as the portal enveloped their bodies and transported them into a world of tantalizing shadows and brilliant light.

"Then we won't go anywhere, Asami...we're already here."
