Why Did You Do It? By:Celebrindal

What? Merry Brandybuck startled awake. He was slung over the back of a huge, greasy orc, being jolted from side to side as it ran.

He looked to the orc next to him, and wasn't surprised to find Pippin in the large brute's arms. Merry looked away, the sight of his brave little cousin finally defenseless and helpless hurting his heart so much. As he averted his eyes to look at the ground, he remembered everything.

Boromir. Boromir had died saving him.

As tears started rolling down his cheeks and wetting the orc's slimy armor, he remembered the last time he had seen Boromir. The strong man had been bowed to the ground, four arrows sticking into him, blood flowing from the wounds. It had been a fleeting glimpse that had pierced his heart and would stay with him forever.

The tears still streaming down his face, he moaned, "Why did you do it, Boromir? Although I was your friend, I didn't deserve your sacrifice! Why?"

Tears streaking down his face, over his cheeks, he hung his head and whimpered, "Why?"

As the Brandybuck's head continued to crash around as the orc ran, a voice came from above, speaking to the little hobbit's heart. "Oh Merry. Don't you see that I love you? The reason I saved your cousin and yourself so willingly is because I love you little guys. I love you."

Merry startled up, searching for the owner of the voice, Boromir. He looked up at the sun, and it smiled at him. What? He looked again, and saw Boromir sitting there on the sun, smiling at him. Merry smiled at Boromir through his tears, and as the spirit vanished, the words, "I love you" were barely heard throughout the forest.

Tears started again, but this time they were tears of joy. Boromir's sending had given him new hope, new strength, and new courage.

"Thank you, Boromir," he whispered, "Thank you."
