"So…Bats?"
Batman looked up from the new shark repellent he was working on. The nocturnal Knight, as it turned out, did a lot of work here. Flash couldn't help but think that was unhygienic but right now that was low on his list of concerns. For once – and it was rare – Flash was feeling philosophical. And he wasn't even drunk.
"Yes, Flash?" the Detective said, in that same weary, resigned tone parents gain when their children ask incessant questions.
"You know how Constantine is always battling demons and the Devil wants his soul and God and the archangels hate his guts and all?"
Batman grunted, going back to work as he listened. He was experimenting with copper sulphate, copper acetate, sodium lauryl sulphate and electromagnetic fields. As far as Flash could remember, he was looking to maximise the success rate of current shark deterrents by using a combined form of the accepted methods, plus Thanagarian technology.
"And you know how aliens defiantly exist. Like Superman, Manhunter and Hawkgirl."
"Yes."
"Bear with me. We also know, from Wonder Woman, that Zeus, Hades, Poseidon and Ares aand all the others, they're real, right? And so are Loki and Thor and Odin. And Rama Kushna watches over Deadman…"
The Bat let out an exasperated breath. Flash cleared his throat and continued, speeding up but careful to remain slow enough that normal ears could catch each syllable.
"Plus, we know Zatanna and Raven use magic, and Phantom Stranger crosses dimensions, and there's multiple universes and Lords of Chaos and Order. And then you've got Ambush Bug who says we're all just characters in comic books. And fanfic. So, my question is this: how does that all…you know, gel? Like, where does that put us? Do I go to Church, be a Christian, or should I be a Pagan? Or are atheists right? Or should I praise Oa? I mean, you got to help me out here, I'm having a crisis of faith. Or a crisis of lack of faith. A crisis of science. What do you believe, Bruce?"
There was a long silence.
"I believe," Batman said in a low, thoughtful voice. "In Justice."
