Moonluna-
Luna sometimes wishes on the moon. Her astronomy teacher has told her that the moon is not a star, but is only a lump of rock in the sky. This impresses her. If a rock can stay in the sky without magic, then she knows it can do anything.
And it should do something for her-they share a name, after all, and a reputation for causing insanity. The moon owes her; without its name, she might be like everybody else. She could make sense somewhere besides behind her eyes, and might be able to remember which things are supposed to be amazing and which are everyday.
The moon has to be amazing. That is why Luna's mother named her for it. Mother had been wise. She would not have given Luna a name without advantages.
The moon never answers Luna when she talks to it, but she doesn't mind. It probably can't hear her well, being so far away. At night she climbs to the top of the Astronomy Tower and shouts to it. Saying wishes out loud can't hurt if nobody else can hear. The same goes for insults. Luna is very good at not hearing.
Luna finds that the moon does not answer wishes very well. She considers wishing on a start, but knows that they are even further away. Even if they could hear her, they have no reason to help her. They are burning fireballs in space. Luna has no favor to exchange for a wish. The moon is a better choice-more giving, somehow. More gentle. But neither stars nor moon can hear her so they cannot grant a favor.
Luna knows there is a way to speak to the moon, if she tries hard enough. After all, Luna's mother was very smart, and she named Luna after it. There must have been a reason.
It is in Potions that Luna gets an idea. She accidentally explodes her potion, but there is only water in the cauldron really, so that is okay. Snape sends her to the Hospital Wing because she was burnt a bit from the boiling water getting all over her robes, and as she leaves the classroom, she says over her shoulder, "I'm going to the moon tomorrow."
She hears no reply, but doesn't really need one. She was wrong about when she would go, though.
Madame Pomfrey insists that she stay in the Hospital Wing overnight. When Luna protests that she must go to the moon, she is ignored. She does not remember what Madame Pomfrey says next. She is too busy thinking in her head, all alone.
She cannot think of a spell to get to the moon, so she makes one up. She will say 'moon luna' and spin in a circle until she falls down. She waits for the room to be empty before trying it, but even then all she does is becomes dizzy, and rips the bandages that are charmed to help heal her burns.
"I want to go to the moon," she tells Professor Flitwick the next day when she wanders in late, "Is there a charm for that?"
Flitwick looks up at her in irritation, "Come to class on time, and don't ask silly questions," he says.
