" 'Ello, love
" 'Ello, love."
That voice was very familiar. Rogue, cheeky and slightly drunk. Elizabeth spun around and saw, exactly as she suspected, Jack Sparrow. Captain Jack Sparrow, to be precise.
They were both coincidently in a bar on the west coast of Tortuga : it was rather more respectable than the east shore, but none the less quite rough. The bar was old, wooden and worn, the barman looked as though he was about to drop dead, the waitress was in her mid-forties but had an alarming chest, all the smokers and drug-dealers had been shooed up to the first floor and the whole place stank of urine, vomit and alcohol. Elizabeth had come here to escape her teenage son and Jack had come … Well, mostly to get drunk.
"Good afternoon, Captain Sparrow." She replied rather coldly, but poor Jack was used to this. She hasn't changed, he thought, in twelve years.
"How are you doing then ?" He asked, staggering slightly. "Grand house, prodigious son, still seeing ineffable William every decade ?" He was very drunk, decided Elizabeth. She had learnt over their adventures that the more drunk he was, the more precise his vocabulary became.
"Yes thank you." Elizabeth was trying to stick her nose up at him without losing sight of his eyes. They were still rimmed with black, although she was pleased to see that there were no more cannibal additions.
Jack looked her up and down twice, pausing on her chest and on her hips.
"Are you here all on your onesy, then ? Beauteous girl like you? Dangerous waters here…"
Elizabeth snorted quite un-lady-like, in fact.
"Jack, must I really remind you that Will taught me to fight? Yes I am alone, my son … Is ill." That wasn't quite the right answer, but was more believable than the real one.
"Well darling, I was going to propound a drink. To remember the old times…"
"The old times where you try to get me in bed or the old times where I try to kill you?" Elizabeth laughed, amused at her own joke. "Yes Jack, I will have drink. Double Brewski, please." With a slightly wicked grin, she went to sit down at a nearby table. The place was dimly lit, with wooden chairs and tables, a couple of windows and many, many drunk men. This didn't bother Elizabeth : she was accustomed to such places, having travelled on the seven seas for long periods of time. Another reassuring fact was that Elizabeth was better fighter than most of these men, especially in their drunk condition.
Jack strolled over to that bar, with his indescribable manner of walking, and ordered two of the best beers. As he was waiting, he glanced over to Elizabeth's table, saw her looking (however absent-mindedly; this was not to disturb Captain Jack Sparrow) and winked. A roguish, clever, cheeky and somehow sexy wink that made Elizabeth flush and turned her heart over. What was she doing ? She married, and Bill Turner the third needed her…
The handsome lady turned her head and put her hand on her sword. This stopped her hands trembling, at the very least. And when Jack ambled back over to their table, slamming the beer on the table (and thereby slopping some), she was able to look him in the eyes. They were as always, twinkling with mischief.
"So. Any farcical party stories for me ?" He declared, suddenly quite serious. Even though the sparkle was still there.
Hesitating, Elizabeth declined the request, much like she had to Barbosa yonks ago …
"Right then. I vote we skip the conversing and go up stairs. I've got a room booked for whatever you fancy…"
Only then did Elizabeth realize what Jack wanted.
Her hand slapped him before she realized it had left her side.
And she was out of the pub before he could call after her.
Smiling roguishly.
