Silk Ribbons,

By Winterwing3000

--

Her heart, her mother once said, was a ball of ribbons. They were made of the finest silk, soft and smooth. And knowing that silk was a treasure among her class, Rin generously bestowed them to the people around her, friends and family. She would offer one end of it to them with a bright smile and shining eyes and they would accept it by tying it to their own hearts.

This way, they were connected forever.

However, when the bandits pillaged her village, slaughtered her family and left her mute, she found out that her ribbons had been torn haphazardly, leaving loose ends from the jagged rips. Her heart became tattered and dirty, bloody even. It hurt to know that her heart became like this, so she carefully wrapped it up with silent words and itchy linen. Maybe after she learned how to clean and mend it properly with more silk, she will start giving it to other people.

Days past as she spent it alone in her humble cave, carefully stitching her heart in secret. One day, when she went to find more silk, Rin stumbled upon a demon. He was beautiful, dirty and tattered like her old heart but beautiful. She decided that she will give him a ribbon, her best ribbon, as she moved in and started to treat him to health.

When she opened her eyes, she felt different. She was warm, protected. And her heart, she felt that it had changed. Staring up, she looked with wonder into those golden-flecked eyes of demon, who was cradling her gently with one arm to his chest. Then she realized that he had mended her heart. How she didn't know, but now, to know that her heart was clean, pure and beautiful once more, she will do the same for him.

Rin quickly trotted after him as he walked away, reaching out with the end of a red ribbon. As she caught up and came to his side, he stopped and looked down at her briefly.

Moments passed as they stood in front of a clearing, eyes connected. Then Rin smiled brightly at him, eyes curved with happiness. He inclined his head and began moving again.

She followed without hesitating.

After all, he took the ribbon and secured it tightly to his heart, coloring the silver with red.
