Bato is now 14 years old, so now he's of age to take the ceremonial test of Ice Dodging. Bato's father takes Bato and the 2 people that he has chosen to come along with him, with Hakota being 1 of them, over by the ocean.
In that area was a boat that was recently made. Bato's father recently decided that he wanted to build his son a new boat for the day of his son's right of passage.
They all board the boat. Bato's father steers the boat until it reaches a field of iceburgs. At this point, he starts putting the young water tribe members into their positions.
He puts his son at the steering mechanism and says "Son, you steer the boat and call the shots. You'll need to be wise to guide the boat safely through the field of ice."
He then puts 1 of the others at the main sail and says "The winds can be brutal, so you'll need to be brave."
He puts Hakota at the jib and says "Your position is about trust. You control the jib. Without your steady hand we will all go down."
After he's done putting them into their positions, he goes to the front of the boat and sits down."I'm now just here to observe you. You are now in control of the boat and you will either pass or fail on your own."
Bato gives commands to his friends while he steers. They follow the commands and they manage to get the boat about halfway through the field iceburgs.
Then a problem occurred. They were headed for a wall of iceburgs, where there is just barely enough room for a water tribe boat to get through between each iceburg.
Bato sees this and commands the ship as best as he can through it. By doing this, the boat goes through the gap between 2 of the iceburgs. That is until it's almost all the way through. Bato had slightly miscalculated the steering, which causes a part of the back of the boat to get cut as it scrapped against part of the iceburg.
Hakota turn around and asks "Are you alright Bato?"
He replies "Yeah, I'm alright, but part of the boat is damaged."
Bato's father stands up and walks to his son. He says "You did a nice job son, but unfortunately there appears to be just to may iceburgs for Ice Dodging right now. You can try again later after some more of the ice melts."He then steers the boat carefully back to the Southern Water Tribe.
