A Genius in Love

Disclaimer: Death Note is the property of Tsugumi Ohba, Takeshi Obata, Shueisha, VIZ Media, Madman Entertainment, and others I may have missed. I do not appear anywhere on the list.

Warning: This is a shot at humor from someone who is rarely funny, so that should be warning enough.

Yagami Soichiro might not have been a genius, but as the chief of police, he was smart and he was observant. He was also very protective of his children.

So he went up to Ryuuzaki one day and informed him, "I will not allow you to marry my son."

Ryuuzaki stared back at the chief with unnaturally wide, saucer eyes, thumb slipping out of his mouth. Finally, he said, "Shouldn't that be Yagami-kun's choice, Yagami-san?"

Soichiro leaned closer and said irritably, "I put my foot down on this matter. Raito is...deluded."

"Yagami-kun is rarely deluded," said Ryuuzaki mildly. "It would even be safe to say that the possibility of everyone else being deluded is much higher than the possibility of Yagami-kun being deluded."

Soichiro glared. "The definition of deluded," he growled, "is thinking everyone else is deluded."

"Is it now?"

"Yes!" snapped the chief of police before he started second-guessing himself. "And when my cool-headed son declares his passionate love for sloppy, sugar-addicted detectives, he is most definitely deluded."

If Ryuuzaki were a dog, his ears would have perked up in interest. It was certainly the first he'd heard of Raito's "passionate love," and he decided there was a 43 percent chance that Kira was trying to catch the detective L off-guard. "Yagami-san," he said calmly, "I doubt very much that Yagami-kun intends to marry me. Even should that be the case, I believe I have a say in the matter."

"And you will say no when the time comes," demanded Soichiro.

Ryuuzaki nodded lightly. "When Yagami-kun declares his undying love to me," he said solemnly, as though pledging a vow, "I will be prepared."

Unfortunately, Raito had chosen that inopportune moment to enter the room and catch Ryuuzaki's words. Paling visibly, he hissed in a strangled sort of voice, "What?"

Ryuuzaki turned unblinking eyes on him. "Ah, Yagami-kun. We were just discussing my secret admirer." This was said at the same time Soichiro yelled out, "Explain yourself, Raito!"

Raito's eyes widened comically until they very nearly resembled Ryuuzaki's. The downside to being a genius was how very quickly one caught on to unpleasant implications. Comprehension dawned on him before the fly on the wall could flap its wing, and he quickly took steps to avert a disaster.

"Dad!" he snapped, cheeks glowing like a police siren. "You're not supposed to read my diary!"

Ryuuzaki quirked an eyebrow, wondering why he'd never seen a hint of this diary before. Very suspicious behavior indeed.

In the next room over, an innocent Death Note lay open on the bedside table, reading:

"I must know L's real name. He is the only one. The only one."

A/N: I don't know what I was thinking. Do your worst. Thanks for reading!
