Blink. Blink. Blink.

Rory Gilmore stared at her computer screen, spellbound by the steady flicker of the cursor. A loud bang startled her and she jumped, looking around for the source of the noise.

And there it was; he had dropped his binder – on purpose, she was sure – and was now looking at her, grinning and no doubt waiting for her reaction. Rory glared at him before deliberately looking away and focusing her attention on the computer screen.

Girls in ball gowns and gorilla masks, black SUVs, late night meetings, Latin catchphrases and one intrepid reporter who witnesses it all. It might sound like something out of a bestselling mystery novel, but it's not.

That was it. Almost an hour and all she had written was 36 words – and not even 36 good words. She had spent so much time with the members of the Life and Death Brigade, participating in their stupid games (no "e" indeed!), sleeping in their expensive tents, even wearing a beautiful blue ball gown and jumping off scaffolding that had to be seven stories high, holding the hand of a boy she barely knew. So why couldn't she write a simple, little article?

It was all his fault. Logan Huntzberger, he of the warm brown eyes and beguiling smile, had been staring at her all afternoon. All. Fucking. Afternoon. Staring, smirking, settling in for a little nap and then doing it all over again."What's the matter, Ace? Having trouble with that article?" Logan asked from beneath the hat he had perched over his face, amusement evident in his voice.

Rory dropped her head into her hands and groaned.
