Hey guys! How are y'all doing today? This little plot bunny attacked me a few days ago and I couldn't get it out of my head. I'm still working on the next chapter of Another Step but until then here ya go! Enjoy this one-shot! And DON'T forget to review!
(flashback in italics!)
Disclaimer: Be glad they don't belong to me! I would lock them and myself in a room all day and let no one come near!
My legs shook underneath me as I made the treacherous journey towards my lab to check upon my brother. My only younger brother, who got injured in a fight because of me, because I wasn't paying attention. I check his vitals, yet there is no change. That's how it's been for the past two weeks.
FLASHBACK-
''YEA BOI! You can't catch the MIKESTER! Missed me again!'' Mikey yelled, evading a deadly blow from the sword of a foot soldier.
I grunted as I used my bo to knock a foot soldier clean of his feet. ''Mikey! Pay attention!''
He just laughed, back-flipping and taunting the foot soldiers even more! ''It's all good Dee! They'll never get me!''
''Your goofing around is going to get us killed! Pay attention and fight properly for goodness sakes!''
Mikey just shook his head and jumped over another soldier, using his nunchucks to knock him out cold. ''You gotta learn to chillax bro! It's just ol' foot soldiers!''
I rolled my eyes and knocked a foot soldier unconscious. Always Mikey. When was he gonna learn that fighting was not always a game, he had to focus more. Either he's gonna get one of us killed or him-
''DONNIE LOOK OUT!''
Before I had time to register what happened a force collided with me sending me crashing on the ground. I looked up in horror to see a foot soldier standing over a now crumpled Michelangelo with a steel baton. The world seemed to slowly stop as I realized that Mikey pushed me out of the way. Mikey took the hit for me, Mikey who I was just calling unfocused a second...
A spark ignited within me as I let out a battle cry and charged at the foot soldier who dared hurt my brother. Within a few minutes all the foot soldiers lay unconscious but they were the least of my concern. I ran over to my brother who had been lying completely still. I checked his pulse and was relieved to feel a beat underneath my fingers. I cradled his head in my lap, it had already swelled with a knot the size of Brooklyn. My thoughts dwindled with one another as my remaining three siblings came to me having fought of another batch of foot soldiers on the other side. One thought clearly stood out- Mikey was injured because of me.
That had been two weeks ago. Two weeks since Mikey had woken up. Two weeks since I had been drowning in my own guilt. And there was nothing I could do. Nothing other than hope that he would wake up from this wretched coma. No words from my siblings would ease my guilt. Nothing would, nothing other than Mikey waking up. I sat down in a chair next to the medical bed he was lying on and buried my face in my arms. It should have been me lying in that bed! Not Mikey! The words I had said to him during the fight had kept haunting me. I had thought he was unfocused and yet, he saved me. I regretted that so much now.
The lab door opened and Vasari entered the room carrying a tray. She made my way towards me and sat down.
''Donnie c'mon eat a little something. Your torturing yourself this way,'' she said.
''I'm not hungry,''
My remaining two siblings entered the room.
''Donnie it's not your fault what happ-'' Leo began before I cut him off with my yell.
''IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME DAMMIT! MY LITTLE BROTHER IS LYING THERE BECAUSE I FAILED TO SEE THE FOOT SOLDIER COMING! HE GOT INJURED BECAUSE OF ME!''
''Donnie, what happened was an accident. It's not yer fault. None of us blames you,'' Raph said.
''But I should have seen it coming! I was the older brother! I should have-''
''Donnie!'' Vasari shouted and firmly grabbed my shoulders. ''What's done is done. You can't change the past! Mikey will wake up! You have to believe in him''
''How?'' I whispered. ''He got hit in the head, it-it shouldn't take this long for him to wake up.'' My hope was dwindling day by day.
''Because he's Mikey,'' Leo said firmly. ''Have you ever seen Mikey give up that easily? He will wake up. You have to believe in him Donnie. It's the only way.''
I wiped my tears, new hope instilled in my heart. ''Yea, ok.'' I picked up the food my sister had brought and ate a few bites. Mikey would wake up. I had to believe that
I picked up a few things that were scattered in the lab. The rest of the guys had gone on patrol but I refused, wanting to be with Mikey in case he woke up. I went to the kitchen to make myself a cup of coffee. The past couple weeks had really been taking a toll on me. I stepped in the kitchen to find Master Splinter already in there, making tea. He turned around and seemed surprised to see me.
''Donatello, why are you not with your brothers and sister on patrol?'' he asked
''I just wanted to be near Mikey if he woke up,'' I said shrugging my shoulders as I grabbed the coffee powder from the above shelf.
''How is Michelangelo?'' he said, sipping on his tea.
I sighed and rested my elbows on the table. ''No change, Sensei.''
''I sense you are feeling guilt for Michelangelo's current condition,''
I looked at my feet fidgeting my thumbs, a bad habit of mine ''I wished I would have been more alert of my surroundings. If I had Mikey wouldn't have been injured, it's my fault'' I confessed, tears pricking the corner of my eyes.
''My son, what Michelangelo did was of his own will, it was his choice to protect you,''
''But I'm the older brother! I should have been protecting him! Not him me!''
''He protected you because of his love for you my son. There is no older or younger in this. Remember that my son. What happened was an accident and Michelangelo will wake up.''
I nodded silently. ''Thank you Father,'' I said and hugged him, needing the reassurance. He chuckled slightly and wrapped his arms around me and said ''Anytime, my son.''
I went into my lab and sat next to Mikey, holding his hand. I watched the steady rise and fall of his chest and wished that he would wake up and open his eyes, laugh with us again.
''Mikey, if you can hear me, I'm sorry. I'm sorry I yelled at you in the fight. I should have seen the foot soldier coming. I'm sorry you got hurt because of me. I never wanted things to be this way. Please wake up, otouto. We miss you.'' I sniffed silently and wiped the tears from my face.
''Do-nnie''
I whipped my head up so fast that I heard m neck crack. Mikey was looking slightly dazed. his baby blue eyes looking at me.
''Mikey! You're awake! Don't you ever do that again! What were you thinking?'' I rambled.
''Donnie, first of all, if I had to do that over again, I would. In a heartbeat. And second of all-'' he groaned and raised flopping it on his forehead, ''My head hurts like shell! The only cure for that is PIZZA! Can I have some pizza? Please? Please? Pleaseeee?''
I shook my head and laughed, trapping my brother in a bone-crushing hug.
''I love you Mikey,'' my voice cracking slightly. ''I missed you.''
''Aww, Love you too Dee! Now about that pizza...,''
I laughed loudly, my heart flooding with relief to see my brother awake and back to his Mikey ways.
''No pizza for a few days! I'll get you some chicken soup.'' He pouted and crossed his arms. ''Party pooper.''
I just rubbed his head fondly, all too happy. Mikey would be Mikey. As always.
Yay! Hope you guys liked this one-shot! Don't forget to review! They're my food and water! Wouldn't want me to die now would you?
