Love Rhyleigh xoxox
In every generic family, the youngest child is babied. Don't get me wrong, I love my family. They're awesome. But when you've got an older brother who's engaged to be married and an older sister who's the head coach of the most famous surfing academy in Australia, it's a little hard to stand out. Especially when you're only halfway through year ten.
My name is Ben Sanderson. Aged fifteen. My sister Bec, as I mentioned, is the head of the surfing school Solar Blue Academy. The boarding house is right here in Blue Water, but do you think we ever see her? Once she was finished being a student there (when she was sixteen) she took off to university in Queensland. Now she's back (she's twenty now), and in charge of three boys and three girls, a little older than me.
My older brother Joe (Bec's twin) is engaged. He's getting married in the new year- to his once worst enemy. Anna Peterson is from Germany, and was a student at Solar Blue when Bec was there. According to my mum and dad (Emily and David) both Bec and Joe had had the spot since the day they were born. But only Bec got it- Anna was a wildcard entrant from Germany. That year, there was seven, including Anna.
Therefore, my brother lost his place. Joe was pretty devastated. But every cloud has a silver lining, as Grandma says (Grandma's full of weird little sayings), and Anna getting into Solar Blue was the best decision in the world. At least, that's what he thought halfway through the year. Anna challenged him to a surf off, letting Joe choose the break. Joe chose the Gallows.
Any non local knows not to surf the Gallows.
But somehow Anna beat him. Joe was even more cut up about that.
So that's my brother.
Actually, I lie. There was a small amount of fuss made over me, one weekend where Mum and Dad arranged for me to stay at Solar Blue, when they were in Queensland. Bec was supposed to be looking after me (what a great job she did!), and Edge (who was my hero back in the day) took me out onto a not very safe break. I was eleven, and I somehow got my foot wedged in a rock. Bec did her best to help me out, but in the end it was one of her academy friends that got me out. I will never forget that weekend- I have the scars to remind me.
So that's my life, as the underappreciated youngest son. Ben Sanderson.
