A/N: A J/E ficlet for your viewing pleasure. A songfic for 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?', obviously. I own neither that song, nor the people involved in the story. Also, I've never even met Ezri, so am not sure how well this fits canonically. Enjoy nonetheless!
Quark served Miles O'Brien his pint of ale, but he didn't immediately leave the chief alone. He stood leaning against his side of the bar, watching Doctor Bashir and Ensign Dax run into each other and start to talk outside on the Promenade. O'Brien glanced up when the Ferengi didn't leave and shot him a curious look. Quark shook his head in despair. "I can see what's happening."
"What?" asked O'Brien, looking around quickly.
"And they don't have a clue," continued the bartender without seeming to notice O'Brien's question.
"Who?"
"They'll fall in love and here's the bottom line. Our trio's down to two!" Quark held up three fingers, then folded one down. O'Brien followed his gaze over to the laughing Julian and Ezri. The engineer frowned as he caught up with Quark's train of thought.
"Oh."
Quark waxed eloquent, gesturing to the stars and the wormhole that blossomed outside the station. "The sweet caress of twilight..." O'Brien wondered how there could be twilight in space. "There's magic everywhere. And with all this romantic atmosphere, disaster's in the air!"
O'Brien, who'd been sensing Julian's attraction to the pretty Trill for a while now and who'd been trying not to think about how many holosuite battles he'd missed due to that infatuation, started looking depressed. "Gee, Quark, you sure know how to cheer a guy up."
"Oh, you've seen it too, huh?" Quark commented, eyeing the couple as they moved away. Ezri's hand strayed to Julian's and they held hands as they walked down the Promenade. "Well, you know what'll happen, don't you?"
"Don't remind me," groused O'Brien, trying to drown himself in his beer tankard.
"If he falls in love tonight, it can be assumed..."
"His carefree days with me are history." Miles finished Quark's thought glumly.
"In short," Quark concluded, "your pal is doomed."
