In a town named Ecruteak City, famed for its two matching towers, or at least they used to be matching before one of them burned down due to a mysterious Pokémon, there is one mystery that most trainers know yet never investigate. There are many attractions in this small town, such as, the dance hall for the Kimono Girls and Morty's ghost-type Pokémon gym. But the one attraction that is the most intriguing to its citizens is the mysterious stranger who appears at night and stalks through the burned down tower, past the lake, and to the Pokémon center. Wondering through these three places and never talking to anyone. People have tried to stay up and figure out what happens to this stranger when morning comes but all who have tried end up falling asleep before morning no matter how awake they feel during the night.
The citizens believe that this stranger is actually the ghost of the poor boy who died when the tower burned down 150 years ago, but Morty himself, an expert in ghosts, has had no luck communicating with the stranger. Years have passed since the stranger first appeared in Ecruteak, yet his purple hair and somber face remain unchanged. Never does the stranger look a day older than when he first arrived. He has been here for so long that no one in the city, not even the elders, can remember a time when he wasn't there prowling the streets at night. When he first appeared, one year exactly from when the tower burned down, he caused confusion and fright to the inhabitants. Now, they just accept him as night to night life. They don't bother him, he never bothers anyone else as he shows up around eleven at night, and gone before morning.
Many trainers who consider themselves to be the next ghost type masters have stopped by to investigate but all have had the same amount of luck; none. Even Agatha, one of the elite ghost type trainers of Kanto, has stopped by to investigate. Nothing seemed to make a difference in his pattern or mood. One day however one of the town elders meet with Morty in the old burned down tower to talk about something in the air that seemed different somehow.
"Hello, sir." The elder gentlemen said.
"Hello, Sage Gaku. You called me her to the tower?" Gym Leader Morty replied.
"I did. My stay in the tower recently has…I don't know any other way to word it. It has changed. It feels, different. Something's coming and I don't know what." Sage Gaku had started to cautiously glace towards the top of the tower.
"Is He coming back? Is He going to take perch on top of the tower again?" Morty was confused yet was starting to become excited at the thought of the old Pokémon of legend coming back home.
"I don't know." Sage Gaku unsurely replied. "Maybe. All I know is that something is changing. Something is going to happen soon. Something wrong? Something right? I don't know. I don't think we will know until it happens."
Morty sighed. "I'll keep watch. I'll let you know if I see anything, or if my Pokémon see anything that might be what we are looking for."
"Good. But know that it also might be a person. Someone that could be considered special, someone who has works in absolute tandem with his or her Pokémon, someone that could be considered to be 'The One'." Sage Gaku, was cautious to say the phrase 'the one'.
"Understood, I shall be vigilant." Morty assured. "If it is a trainer that I am sure they will be passing by my gym sometime soon."
With that, and a silent nod from the sage, Morty left and prepared himself for whatever trainer might come through his doors next.
