She stared at the plus sign that was blinking in front of her, trying not to drop the device entirely.
It couldn't be real. She almost cried, but the sound of her front door opening downstairs was enough to jar her from her emotional staring. She stood, hearing Fitz's footsteps on the wood floor below.
"Livvie, I'm here."
Liv cleared her throat, and scrambled to hide the test. Where could she hide it that Fitz wouldn't be able to stumble on accidentally? She searched for a box of tampons or pads, but realized that she hadn't bought any that month, she hadn't gotten her period in nearly three months since she'd been on birth control, and when she did get it, she only used pantyliners.
She thought about just tossing it into the garbage, hide in plain sight? Seemed like a fair idea, but she discounted that as well; Fitz wasn't always so aware, but he would notice a pregnancy test in the trash can.
"Livvie! I got Chinese! Did you want to eat at the table or the couch? Isn't it Dancing with the Stars night?"
Liv felt her cheeks warming as she imagined Fitz setting up their dinner downstairs. Maybe all would be okay… Just because they'd only been dating five months didn't mean that he would be angry. They worked well together! He might even welcome the prospect of becoming a father. Olivia felt her own eyes rolling as she ignored her inner monologue; what 24 year old man welcomed a baby? None.
He was going to be furious. If he wasn't, he would be worried, panic-nauseous or depressed. Liv felt the lump in her throat swelling.
"Liv! I'm coming up!"
Liv yelled at herself to move: throw the pregnancy test in the garbage, close the bathroom door, get off of the toilet; something. Unfortunately her screaming didn't seem to affect her physical self. She saw Fitz coming up the stairs, he paused, chopsticks in hand.
"Uh… You okay? Were you just sick?"
Liv shook her head, her eyes nervously darting toward the test cradled in her hand.
"What's that?"
She helplessly looked down at the test and turned her head away; Fitz picked up the test from her hands and read it; he was silent for a long painful pause.
"Liv…"
Liv looked up, trying to be strong. She expected to see conflict on his face, in his eyes, but she saw none. Instead she found his face alight, his eyes twinkling and a newfound elation on his face.
"Are you…?"
Olivia grinned, throwing herself into his arms.
"I'm pregnant, yes. We're going to have a baby."
Fitz caressed her face in wonder and pulled her in for a kiss. Liv felt his tears hit her face, the butterflies in her stomach, the ones that she'd felt when she first saw Fitz were back, in full force. She gripped him hard, hoping that she'd never have to let him go.
"A baby," Fitz breathed. "A little bit of me and you."
The butterflies in Liv's stomach soared, she could almost feel how full her life was going to be.
