To Eternity, a harry potter fanfic

A short one-shot. Its sad, so don't kill me.

To Eternity

It was Draco and Hermione's seventh year at Hogwarts. The battle was raging on and Hogwarts was scheduled to be closed the next day, with all students to return to their respective homes on the Hogwarts Express. Yet, instead of sleeping or packing up their belongings, Draco and Hermione sat on a high ledge top together, their feet dangling over the side. Sitting close together for warmth, Draco had his arm wrapped protectively around Hermione's waist and she had her head laid on his shoulder.

They did not speak for both had heavy thoughts weighting upon their minds. Their inevitable separation as well as the danger they were in loomed before them. Yet their was no one to whom they could ask advice, for no one knew of their relationship of over a year, for its discovery would have meant great danger. This was a forbidden love and no one would either accept it or tolerate it.

"Hermione?"

"Hm?"

"I love you so much."

Hermione looked at him and smiled. "And I love you."

Draco smiled and then, growing serious, turned his face away. Hermione looked at him with concern.

"What is it, Draco?"

Draco seemed to hesitate before responding. "You have to go."

"I won't."

"We've talked about this. You have to go into hiding. You know of my family's connection with the dark side. I told you of my discovery that you are among an intended target very soon. You must protect yourself."

"I won't. I won't leave you."

"You cannot stay with me. You know I have been summoned to appear before Voldemort in just a few hours time. When I am not there and it becomes obvious I have deserted them, they will come for me. They will hunt me down. You would not be safe."

Hermione set her jaw stubbornly. "I don't care. I won't leave your side."

Draco was silent for a moment. Then he turned to look at Hermione and gently cupped her face in his hands.

"I couldn't bear to lose you, Hermione. I cannot have you taken from me."

Tears began to form in Hermione's eyes and she attempted to wink them away.

"What?! You think I could stand to lose you instead?! I couldn't! You stupid- stupid jerk!" She burst into tears. "I won't have you leave me here alone!"

Draco cradled Hermione in his arms, shushing her and wiping away her tears. Eventually Hermione's tears subsided and then she wrapped her arms about his waist apologizing for yelling at him. He just kissed her lightly on the head and told her not to worry. Then they sat in silence; the weight of their dead end situation mocked them.

"I love you, Hermione, I would spend my life with you if we could."

Hermione looked at him. "Then lets."

She stood up onto the ledge and offered her hand to Draco, who also stood.

"Let's spend eternity together. I won't leave your side and you won't leave mine."

She stretched her arms, letting the wind whip around her as she closed her eyes.

"Let's fly away…" after several moments she lowered her arms and turned towards him, with questions in her eyes.

Draco took her in his arms and gave her a long gentle kiss. Then he took her hand.

"To eternity, dearest Hermione."

Hermione smiled. "To forever."

And they plunged from the building, Draco holding tight around Hermione's torso as she clung to his shirt. The air wrapped around them as they fell and they locked lips in a promise of eternity.

They fell so that they might rise and fly free, together.
