It was filthy aboard the Jolly Roger, and she was ruined beyond repair. He stared at the broken handle, the staff that had been shattered in anger, and was now beyond salvation to better the rest of the deck. Smee had come to him with the news that she was no more, that there was nothing to be done to save her, to bring her from such a fate.

That she was—here and now—done for.

The mop that had served him so well in all those years, that had kept the Jolly Roger sparkling even as the Jewel of the Realm, was beyond help, had mopped her last deck under the hands of Smee—and Smee had ruined her; broken her; destroyed her—

She was gone because of him!
