Katara watched her older brother run past her, taunting her with his toy boomerang. When he played games like this one, he would call her 'fire nation' and throw it at her when their mother wasn't looking. Sometimes she would cry, and her mother would come rushing towards her; other times she would try to muster up enough water to get him away from her. Most of the time, though, she would just take his boomerang and run away with it – causing Sokka to run to their mother.

"Katara took my boomerang!" Sokka yelled now. Their mother – a beautiful woman, their whole world, tall with brown hair and fair blue eyes – looked at her two children and smiled fondly, shaking her head with laughter.

"He threw it at me!" six-year-old Katara countered. She ran behind her mother before Sokka could make a move, then sticking out her tongue and shaking his boomerang – her trophy – in the air. Sokka dove at her, only to be picked up by his mother by his legs.

"Mom!" He swayed back and forth. "Put me down!" Katara giggled. Upon getting an eyeful from her mother, she clamped up and placed the boomerang down.

"Are you two done, hm?" Sokka pressed his fingers to the ground, digging his nails into the earth as he tried to get away – his mother knew better. She pulled him up just a little higher, just so that he couldn't reach. He groaned.

"I'm sorry, Katara," he admitted in defeat.

His mother set him gently on the ground, bent down, and kissed his forehead. "That's a good boy." She went back to cooking, her two children following her. Katara pulled at the ends of her dress, while Sokka leaned on the ice counter. She looked into her son's eyes, seeing his father; and, because she wasn't watching what she was doing, a sharp pain hit her. She turned to the fish she was cutting and saw the blood rolled down her finger – she had nicked it.

"Mommy." Katara's watchful eyes came into view as she put her finger into her mouth. Her daughter was so young, and yet she knew so much. She peered up at the fish. "Sushi again?"

"Yeah," Sokka answered before she could. "Can we go get Dad?" Their mother nodded, and Sokka took his sister's hand, pulling her along.

"Be safe," she called after them. Katara turned, waving with grin on her face.

Sometimes their mother just wished she could give them more.
