The Way Nick Does

Sara almost turned around and walked out when she saw Sofia in the break-room, but the woman had already seen her and leaving would have been both rude and cowardly, so instead she plastered on a smile and walked in.

"Sofia, hi."

"Hi Sara. How are you?"

"Oh, the usual." She hated the way the woman could sound so poised, so confident, when she herself always felt like an awkward teenager, especially around Grissom.

They fell silent as Sara made tea and sat down on the other side of the table. After a moment, Sofia rose.

"Well," she said, "I guess I should get back to work. I'll see you later."

"Later," Sara replied. She thought that was it, but at the door the other woman turned.

"Sara? Just so you know, Grissom never looks at you the way Nick does." And she was gone.

Sara frowned as several pieces fell together in her mind.

"The way Nick does," she repeated to herself. And smiled.
