Chapter 1: The Call
Florida. It's not the worst or the best place in the world but it sure is as sunny as hell, in my opinion anyway. The main cities are crowded all the time, filled with drunken idiots at night and too many people to count in the day time. The lights rarely go off, almost like Las Vegas, minus the hot chicks and fancy fountains. Now, the outskirts of Florida, you know, by the swamps, that is a whole different story.
Unlike the city, it is dark all the time, even in the day (yes, I know. An exaggeration. What else can I say though? There is one lamppost every 10 miles and most houses only use candles as their main source of lighting). It isn't necessarily the 'poor' section, but more of the 'I-don't-give-a-shit-about-the-city-so-I'm-going-to-live-out-here-while-you-can-wait-in-a-stop-light-for-eight-years. We have that luxury. I mean, sure, there aren't any big malls or stores around, but there at least aren't any stoplights or annoying people to get in the way. It is a blessing. The lights are. Not where I live.
My 'house,' I guess you can say is more of a shack thing that is about 800sq feet or so. Two rooms, a tiny living room, one bathroom, and a kitchen. Pretty small, but since I don't live with anyone, it is okay. After all, all I do is play video games all day long. It is my passion. It's good to be passionate about something, right?
I stared up lazily into the night sky, laying on my home-made hammock, not caring about what the heck is going on in the world, when a vibration by my butt makes me jump and fall off the hammock. I rub my elbow and wince in pain. I see that I am bleeding, so I decide to get up and go get some bandages. That's when I realize it is my phone that was ringing. I answer one second before the vibrating stops and answer frustratingly "Yes?"
"Woah dude. Calm down. I's just me, Felix," answered the Swedish gamer as he chuckled a bit in the backgroud.
"Crap. Sorry, bro. I thought- just never mind. What up?"
"Welllllll... You see.. There's this thing..and..yea..."
It was silent for a moment until I broke the silence with an awkward laugh and asked "Yea..what?"
"God, please PLEASE don't get mad but guess what I'm going to FLORIDA! Too see you! I have a whole month off and I decided to take a break from gaming so I though, hey, why not visit Ryan? So then-"
But I stopped listening after the word Florida. Felix's' words were nothing but background noise as I worried what the hell I was going to do. My house was too small, so Felix couldn't stay here. The nearest hotel was one hour away, so that was too far. Unless, of course, Pewds didn't care about distance. And he isn't here to see me all the time, right? I mean, he probably wants to go places, without me. I paced nervously, still not listening to Felix as he went on and interrupted him "When are you coming?"
"Dude, I told you. I'm in the midway checkpoint. I'll be there tomorrow at 3 p.m."
Silence.
"Ryan, what's wrong?"
I didn't want to answer him.
"Sorry for the short notice. I can tell you're... anxious. Sorry, man. I just thought I would surprise you. Guess it backfired at me in the end." Felix sighed. "I can go back if y-"
"No!" I screamed into the phone without thinking. "I am really excited. Don't worry about me. I'm cool, bro."
"Sweet!" Well the flight is going to leave. See ya in 9 hours!" He hung up before I could say good bye.
I closed my eyes and laid back down on my hammock. Ugh. I had a lot of cleaning to do. And a lot of lies to make up.
