It was Wednesday the Eighth of May, 1996. Luna was in her fourth year. He was in his fifth. They were best friends.
They had met at the Defence group Harry Potter had set up. Both of them were outcasts, ridiculed by their peers. They bonded over this fact. She shared the secret of her past, and he shared the secret of his parents misfortune. They kept the secrets deep in their hearts, cherishing the fact that the other had the courage to tell each other.
However, back to the present. It was just before the Exam period. Luna was helping him revise, her blue toenails gleaming in the Spring sun. Her platinum blonde hair bounced off her shoulders, reflecting the sunlight. A small smile was on her lips, and she leant backwards, stretching out in the sun.
He was watching her, instead of his book. "The wrackspurts are getting to you," she commented lightly, holding her hand over her eyes and peering at him.
"Are they?" He questioned, distracted.
"Oh, yes. Soon they'll take over."
"That's nice."
"Neville Frank Longbottom, are you listening to me?"
"Yea, knees..."
Sighing, Luna waved a barefoot in front of his face. Jolting at the smell of her feet, Neville came back into the living world. "Why aren't you wearing any shoes? Or socks? Where are your socks?"
"I discarded them," she shrugged easily.
"Why?"
"It's a secret."
She smiled again, a peaceful, serene smile. "A secret." Neville groaned. "Of course it is. Everything is a secret."
"But I will tell you if you promise to keep it to yourself," she grinned wider.
"Of course I'll keep it to myself," Neville rolled his eyes impatiently. "When have I done otherwise?"
"Okay." She leaned in closer, reaching next to her friends's ear. "They grew legs and walked away. I couldn't do anything to stop them."
"They- what?"
"They might have been chanting Loony Lovegood as they left," she smiled wider. "I got them back though: the next person to touch them would have turned a bright purple."
Neville laughed, loudly. Luna giggled along, watching as her best friend leaked tears out of his eyes. Wiping away laughter, he grinned. "That was amazing. Have I ever said that you are brilliant?"
"Many times," she replied. "I believe the wrackspurts are taking over, Nev. Even more than before."
"For all time," Neville replied. "Of course."
All of this was private to them, of course. Their close friendship was a secret to everyone.
"Bubsy!" Luna called, beckoning one of the house-elves from the Hogwarts kitchen.
"Miss Lovegood called," a young house-elf popped up.
"I would like two glasses of lemonade, please."
"Of course, Missy!"
"You have a house-elf?" Neville asked.
"No. Don't tell anyone, but I am friends with some of the house-elves from the kitchens."
Another secret. Bubsy popped back, two glasses in her hands. "For Missy and her friend," she clapped, handing them the bubbling liquid, before leaving.
Luna sipped her lemonade gently. "Bitter, like my cousin."
She wrinkled her nose, taking another sip. "This stuff, it reminds me of a simpler time. My mum made it all the time."
"Nobody else can know?"
"No. Or the nargles will attack."
"Of course, Lune."
Their existence was a secret.
