The sun goes on and rises
While the world you knew
Crumbles into the dust of a decade past.
A decade?
A century.
A thousand moons drifting overhead
As the waiting draws on
Silence in the darkness
No breath.
No heartbeat.
Then –
A single morning breaks
A sound invading the silence
Like a drumbeat
Like footsteps drawing ever nearer
A heartbeat.
Her heartbeat.
Time tangles like thread around a knife
Because you know
One day
That heartbeat will stop
The world will plunge into quiet once more
A silence deeper and more painful than ever before
The rosy blush of dawn setting into ice.
Would you stop that heart?
For a cold hand to hold
A cold heart to beat noiselessly next to yours
A smile to kiss for all eternity.
