Nursery Rhymes

1.

There was only a nursery fire
No secret to Mary's demise.
Nothing left when flames expired.
Another spark grew in John's eyes.
It had to be more, he repeated
(The evidence said otherwise)
From love and life he'd been cheated.
So he spun truth from lies.
Dean held Sam when Dad explained
How evil could be so easily disguised
Demons, monsters- no detail restrained
Dean nodded, unable to stop Sam's cries.
I will teach you a nursery rhyme
When things get bad, repeat it every time

2.

John leaned closer and whispered,
These words that scorched and blistered:

She gave you a gift
That day she died,
A chance to see a
World with new eyes.

You've been given this
Chance to stop bad dreams.
All you have to do is kill
And simply follow me.

3.

Sam's much too little to know
Where Dean and Dad go some nights
If he suspects, it doesn't show.
Besides, that would start a fight.
They've been running from hell.
Dad trains Dean in early light
(Or maybe, Sam wonders, themselves?)
Dad always says what's right.
Dean, also wants to question
Each time they take flight.
But he gets too scared to mention
When John's knives are aimed at his height.
So he repeats that nursery rhyme.
The blood on his hands will fade in time.

3.

When questions need to be ceased
John tells them what he believes:

It's about time you grew up.
She burned and we did too.
Follow my commands to live;
No angels are watching over you.

A moment's doubt is deadly,
Don't give in to hesitation.
A mistake is fatal and will
Lead to a deserved damnation.

4.

She's screaming in fear.
(His teacher? A beast?)
Dean can't keep his head clear.
Dad keeps her from release;
Dean has orders and a knife…
He stares at his dad in disbelief.
He's supposed to take her life?
His first kill should bring relief.
Before, he watched as the guard.
Simply simmered in his grief.
Now he kills- it wasn't so hard
Surprised, he tucks his knife in its sheath.
Maybe Mom had a different nursery rhyme.
And maybe he'll get better at killing in time.
