"Ok, come sit next to Papa, Gracie and we'll start your lesson," Edd said as he sat down on the piano bench and opened the lid.

Gracie walked up and with some help from Edd sat down next to him.

He then opened his worn copy of A Beginners Piano Guide to the third lesson: Heart And Soul.

It was a simple song and he knew the brilliant four year old could easily learn to play it.

When he and Kevin adopted Gracie at birth, she was a preemie and the doctors told the young couple she'd have a host of issues and would need special care for the rest of her life. But if her red hair was an indicator of anything, and it was, she fought through every single issue, leaving teams of shocked and amazed doctors and nurses in her wake.

She was as book smart as Edd was at the same age, but had Kevin's stubbornness and fighting spirit. With wide blue eyes and a curious mind, it was hard to convince anyone that the two men adopted her. She was their perfect little clone.

Her new favorite thing was to play piano with Edd.

Kevin got him the baby grand as a wedding present and Edd would play on it every day.

When Gracie came home from the hospital, it wasn't surprising to see her wrapped up tight in Edd's Moby Wrap as he would play a tune to soothe her when she got fussy, a lullaby to put her to sleep, or a song just because.

Because her young life was always filled with her Papa's music, she wanted to learn how to do it, too. Edd was thrilled to indulge her.

Lessons usually occurred on Saturday afternoons.

Kevin would typically be at the YMCA playing whatever sport was in season or working out. Edd and Gracie would practice so she'd have something to play for her Daddy when he got home.

But today, the Y is closed. A gas leak on the block meant an evacuation and Kevin's pick-up basketball game was canceled. He decided to take the afternoon to tune up his motorcycle as the weather was getting nicer and that meant he could ride again, much to Edd's chagrin.

While Kevin was in the kitchen making a sandwich, Edd pointed out the keys she would need to play and then started to play the tune himself so she could see and hear how it was supposed to be done.

A split second later, Kevin's shaking his ass in the living room and singing loudly.

"Heart and soul

I don't know all the words

Heart and soul

Tom Hanks is dancing on a GIIIIIIANT PIIIAAAANNNOOOOOO!"

Gracie doubles over in laughter at Kevin's shenanigans, tears streaming down her cheeks. Edd smirks, but didn't miss a note.

"You're ridiculous, my dear," he sighed once he finished the song.

"And you love me."

"I do," Edd grinned as he leaned in for a kiss that Kevin was happy to return.

And even at four years old, Gracie knew that while her family may be unconventional there was still a lot of love there.

The lesson went on as planned and after dinner, Gracie gave a concert to her dads as they slow danced in the living room. This was a scene that would repeat itself often over the years and it was always very high on her list of favorite things.
