There was a peaceful quiet that surrounded the city at this time of night. No cars rushed around, the stores were closed, awaiting the new day to arrive. A summer breeze blew through an open window. The wind brushed the face of a twenty-something women, asleep in her bed. Her eyes fluttered open and looked upon the sleeping figure next to her. His dark hair was ruffled from sleeping, not that it was ever wasn't, and she smiled as she watched his face. She loved the way the moonlight entered through the window and shone onto his face.
As she stared at him, her mind drifted back to times before. Not the ones spent together, but the ones spent apart. All of those crucial moments they had missed over the years because of their own immaturity. Her mind continued to float and in the dead quiet of the room, his voice suddenly caught her off guard.
"You look sad." He said, as he attempted to suppress a yawn.
"What?" Her eyes left the corner of the room at which she had been staring and looked at him.
"You look sad." He repeated, sliding closer to kiss her forehead. He cupped her face in his hand and gently rubbed her cheek.
"I'm not sad…" she began, but stopped when she saw the unbelieving look on his face. "I'm just- do you ever wonder about those years?"
"Which ones?" he asked. They were both on their sides facing one another, so close that their foreheads were touching.
"The ones, after…"
"I left?" he asked. They spoke so quietly, just a whisper, that they created a world all their own around them, cut off from all else.
"Yeah."
"I guess, sometimes, yeah." He told her gently. There was a sad smile on his face.
"Do you ever regret any of it?"
"Some of it, but if it hadn't happened we wouldn't be here."
She smiled. She enjoyed his optimism that had been absent when they were younger.
"And here is good." She paused, curious as to what moments he did think about. "Like what?"
"Well, I never saw you graduate."
"You saw my college graduation."
"But not your high school."
She smiled and gave him a playful shrug. "It wasn't that different."
"But you had a speech…" he replied, feeling guilty.
"Jess, don't feel bad. Things happened this way for a reason."
"I know, we just missed a lot." He had an air of regret about him, but more than she knew he would ever let on.
"This was we'll never get bored of each other." She told him with a teasing smile.
"I could never get bored of you."
She laughed and he leaned in and kissed her. As he pulled back, she snuggled next to him, tucking her head beneath his chin and sighed. He put his arm around her and stroked her side. After a long silence she spoke.
"Prom. I would have liked to go to prom."
"I still owe you a tux don't I."
"Yes. And a dance. And me in a pretty dress. You never did get to see me in a pretty dress."
"I do now." He told her, kissing the top of her head.
She lifted her hand off the bed and stared at the ring on her finger, as the moonlight cascaded off of it. She turned her head to look him in the eye.
"Yeah, you do." She said, a huge smile crossing her face. They kissed again as the rest of the city continued to sleep.
Hope you liked it. If you did, let me know. If you didn't, let me know anyway!
