"Mirror, Mirror"
"Your boss wants you in early, Andrea!" My elderly mother shouts to me as I hop in the car.
"If he's lucky!" I holler back and hurry to the one one place where I can chuck all my cares.
Street lights, and cars, are ignored and I pull up to the skating rink where I've spent more than one night ignoring any pressures of the outside world.
One and a two and a three, glide to the left and twirl around the words synchronize themselves in my mind as the blades slide across the ice. The lights are low and I found myself lost in the music; with the exception of the wall to wall shiny mirror which reflects the picture of me in my shiny white skating outfit with silver lining. It also smiles upon my partner. He looks at me with a very seductive smile; at least I think so.
The music which has begun to play takes my mind off the mirror, but the man holdling my waist. Tall and dark, well his hair is anyway, and his skills on blades are as sharp as the surgeon's knife he's held in his hand on more than one occasion.
"Leave my work out of this." Dr. Bracket's words show he has read my mind and his hands lift me as we both twirl around and around. The empty tables disappear; as does the desk holding any rental shoes. La da da la de da da I hum as the music continues top play. This is heaven, I am skating on solid ice with the man of my dreams.
Click, click, click. Grrr, I want to scream as the world I have been in evaporates upon an old janitor who has started to flip the switches off. I sigh as I find myself alone facing a dusty, dirty, cracked mirror. It was all an illusion, one I have created for myself anytime I skate.
** "Mirror, Mirror on the wall…" ** I start to use the first half of a line of the very old fairytale everyone knows as I lay my hand on it's surface, "…why did you take the fairest of them all?"
*Mirror, mirror, on the wall* line from old fairytale Snow White; clearly not of my making.
