"James," Percy asked one morning at Wellsworth Station. "Why do you go sliding down Gordon's Hill?"
"Well," replied his brother. "I wanted to do it so that I could teach you how to do it when you're older."
Edward was nearby, and overheard this conversation.
"Oh dear, I better warn Father." He said to himself.
And he left Wellsworth Station to tell Gordon of the news.
...
He didn't see Gordon, but he met Henry, and told him what was going on. Henry then told Emily, who then told Molly that afternoon. When Molly told her husband, Gordon during their last trains of the day, he was not happy in the slightest.
"Well, I'll ensure he doesn't do it!" He vowed.
...
That night, he spoke to James.
"James, I heard about you wanting to teach Percy about sliding down hills. I hereby forbid you from doing so."
James, however, was very angry on hearing this statement.
"Well, I shall pay him out!" He hissed to himself when the others were asleep.
Percy he hissed
Yes James?
Meet me at Wellsworth, half past seven tomorrow morning.
Alright, Percy whispered sleepily.
...
So early the next morning, James and his crew met Percy at Wellsworth Station, at the bottom of Gordon's Hill.
"Ready little brother?" James asked.
"I think so," Percy replied. "What are we doing James?"
"Oh, just doing a little sliding." the red engine grinned mischievously.
Percy was happy- he had been looking forward to this lesson for so long.
All you do is push yourself off the hill and allow yourself to roll down the hill whilst ever so gently applying your brakes. It's easy apart from the timing and pressure of the brakes- that requires full concentration and skilled timing."
"Right,"
Inside his cab, Percy's crew decided that maybe they should put a stop to this.
But as Percy's driver was reaching for the brake, Percy shutting his eyes and then launched himself down the line.
Of course, James was pleased with Percy's progress- but that was before a loud whistle cut through the countryside. It was Hiro taking a long goods train!
"Percy, stop!" James yelled loudly, hoping his brother would hear him.
But Percy kept going. Due to him keeping his eyes shut the whole time and putting all his concentration into sliding he wasn't aware of the imminent danger.
Hiro saw his friend speeding down the hill, but was unable to reverse as it would be dangerous- plus the trucks brakes had locked fast due to him stopping suddenly.
"PERCY!" He yelled, hoping that he would be heard.
He was- but before long Percy was derailed and in the muddy undergrowth beside the line.
His wheels and footplate were covered in mud and his buffers were dented.
"Percy, are you alright?" Hiro asked him in alarm. "I am so sorry, I was trying to go back, but the trucks were stuck fast!"
"I'll be okay." Percy replied bravely, even though he was in a lot of pain.
James felt wretchedly awful.
...
Later, the Fat Controller and Gordon spoke to James.
"James you have just caused a serious accident!" The Fat Controller snapped. "Percy's crew are now in hospital, Hiro was late getting his goods to Brendam and now repairs will have to be made to the line and Percy!
"Yes sir, sorry sir."
"You are grounded for this, James." Gordon growled, but the Fat Controller stopped him.
"No Gordon. I have a better idea- you shall be kept in the sheds until tomorrow evening James to think about what you have done!"
"Yes sir, sorry sir." The red engine parroted, but he knew he was in a lot more trouble now.
