Because Steve works for a firm that doesn't know the word 'retirement', and he's Danny's boss, and Danny's partner, and Danny's best friend, and Gracie's beloved Uncle.
Because Danny lives for his daughter and his ohana, and he's Steve's subordinate, and Steve's partner, and Steve's best friend, and Steve's honorary brother.
Because they can't afford it, them, to not work, because one of them would have to resign, and how could Danny, or Steve for that matter, deprive sweet, sweet Gracie of her Uncle Steve, or Steve of his niece, and this wouldn't do, no, none of this, no way.
Because they found something [Five-0, themselves, each other] they never thought they could have before getting it, and they. Can't. Lose it. As [When in doubt, don't] in it for all or nothing, they chose the quite-not-all but much-more-than-nothing.
This doesn't mean they're miserable. Actually, they're pretty happy. Because what's not to be happy about loving dearly and being dearly loved?
They say I love you every single day without fail in the laughs, the shooting and running and catching bad guys, the carguments (Danny says it's not a word, Steve says he finds it catchy. They never say anything else about it) and the easy banter and the sweet smiles.
And it is amazing.
