Sophie's POV

The moonlight glinted off of my arm as I raised it to brush the strands of hair from my face. I flinched slightly when my ice cold hand grazed against the warm skin of my forehead. Normally, it wouldn't have bothered me, but my hand was much colder than usual due to the fact that it had been submerged in snow for nearly two hours.

I glanced over to my right at Tom, our leader, and my personal hero, whose pale skin stood in stunning contrast to his deep black hair, especially in the bright light of the moon. Ironically, it was full tonight. It wasn't too long ago that Tom had saved me from the very monster we hunted now, almost nine years to the day. Neither of us had changed much since that day, looks or personality wise. Of course we didn't age anymore. As I gazed at the moon, I remembered the day perfectly…

I walked down the forest trail near my house, one that I had been on many times before. My breath was visible in the air due to the freezing winter temperatures, though there was no snow on the ground yet. From somewhere in the forest, there was a crunching of leaves and the snap of a breaking branch. I sped up slightly out of apprehension, but heard no more until…

A few minutes after, a booming howl in the distance. Starting to panic, I went to a jog, then a full blown run as the noise got closer. In my haste, I dropped my scarf, one my grandmother had made for me. I whipped around to pick it up. As I was looking down, I felt the cold breath on the back of my neck. Slowly I looked up to see the beast for the first time.

It was huge. A wolf. About the size of a horse at the shoulders, and beautiful. Its shiny silver fur reflecting the sun filtering through the tree branches. Then I met its gaze. Brilliant red eyes glared back at me. The creature held a terrible beauty. Its lip curled back in a snarl, revealing a row of dagger-like teeth. I was rooted to my spot, unable to escape although I was not bound or restrained.

That's when the pain came. Sharp and from the back, piercing into my shoulder. I wheeled around and saw another wolf, a dirty gray color with the same piercing scarlet eyes. I fell to my knees at the agonizing pain in my shoulder. The pain came again as I realized that the other wolf had lunged. The blow knocked me to the ground. Excruciating pain ripped through my entire body. As I struggled with consciousness, I was sure half the bones in my body had been broken.

I was nearly out when I saw him. My saving grace. He flew through the trees like a bullet, smashing into the side of one of the wolves, which gave a howl of agony and limped off through the trees. The second wolf wasn't fazed though. He gave a snarl that ripped through the empty forest. It failed to intimidate the boy though, who merely whispered something which sounded like, "There are others.".

At this the wolf snapped its head around to survey the surroundings. It seemed to notice something in the distance, and turned to take its flight. The boy, no older than 18 by the looks of it, came and leaned over me. "Can you hear me? Are you alright?", and then, nothing.

Alright, so most of this was just background, but next time I should get into a little more about the characters, like who (and what) they are. Reviews would be appreciated, good or bad :)
