A/n: I got this idea from the haiku I wrote in the seventh grade. After I bombed my last attempt at an avatar story, I am going to start with a short fic this time.

I promise

The flame in our eyes

Burns all that comes before us

Time will burn the past

To Mai,

If I don't come back, I want you to know this. I'm sorry I left you in the middle of a war, it was the only thing I could do. If only you knew my destiny, then maybe you wouldn't hate me as much. The things I will miss about you go on and on. I will miss our dates which Azula would interrupt; I will miss your emotionless façade. I will miss the amusement in your eyes when Azula found out her best friend was dating her brother. I will miss the rare smiles you would only give to me. Most of all I will miss the feeling in my stomach I get when I'm around you. It's a wonderful feeling; it's like having someone tell me…that you love me as much as I love you. I've never said that to anyone before, and it feels great. I'm not sure if you feel the same, but I hope you do. My plan is ruined now. Once the war was over, I was going to propose to you. We would be engaged and then get married when we turned twenty. My father would be dead and there would be peace.

I love you,

Zuko

Mai shakily put down the letter and wiped the stream of tears down her face away.

"Your plan wasn't ruined, just postponed" she said in a barely audible voice "I love you too, Zuko"

She began walking out of her room but stopped when she saw something on her bed out of the corner of her eye. She walked over and picked it up. It was a gold ring with the word 'I promise' engraved on it.

SPOILER ALERT! This is my take on the note Zuko leaves for Mai in the episode Day of the Black Sun: Part 2

A/n: Yes, I know Zuko seemed OOC, but I'm a girl trying to write from a guy's point of view
