Across the Stars

Anakin gasped. There she was, his angel, his wife, the mother of his two beautiful children. She turned at the sound, seeing him and flinching back.

"Padme!"

"Stay away from me!" She cried desperately.

"What's wrong?" He whispered tenderly.

"You are, that's what!"

Anakin recoiled, startled by the sudden outburst from this usually diplomatic woman.

"And since you can't kill me here like you did on Mustafar, I am not afraid of you. Not like I was so many times when we were together. So I'm going to tell you exactly what I think of what you've done."

"Padme?"

"You have no idea how much I've suffered, watching the Empire and watching you. Snuffing out so many innocent lives! Do you really think that you can just say 'oh, that was Vader and not me' and be magically forgiven by everyone? Well you can't! Anakin, you killed the Jedi. You killed the Jedi children. You killed Alderaan and all those on it. You killed Obi-wan, and you killed me!" By this point Padme was outright shouting.

"I-I'm sorry..."

"That is not even half of what you've done and you know that."

"P-please, Padme, forgive me. I-"

"No! I will not forgive! I will not forgive what you did to the Republic. To your own daughter. To me!"

Anakin felt his control slipping. He reached into the Force as he had on so many occasions before, reaching out towards her throat - and found that he could barely see her. He could barely see anything. Anakin stopped trying to choke her for a moment and looked down at himself. He was fading from view and, he realized, from existence.

"No," He whispered hoarsely. "No! Please, Padme, I'm sorry! What can I do?"

"Reject the dark side. Purge it from yourself. Anakin, 'I can't forgive you' doesn't mean 'I don't love you'. I love you more than anything else. Your breath is my only air. Your face is the only beauty I will ever see."

Anakin remembered thinking something almost identical to what Padme had just said. It had been right after the battle of Coruscant. He'd been looking for her in a crowd of senators. Threepio had been there. Just a couple of minutes later, he had learned of her pregnancy. That night his nightmares about her death had started. Then everything went wrong. She was right. His crimes were unforgivable. But he was not unlovable. Anakin opened his eyes, which he hadn't realized were closed and looked at her. She was a lot more visible now. A glance down at himself confirmed that he was more solid now, too. She smiled gently at him and opened her arms. And in the place where time has no meaning the two lovers embraced forever.
