Summary: Cross did not cross his fingers when he told his lie.
Maria Engeline was a beautiful woman with golden hair and eyes of clear sapphire. Silent and shy, her eyes spoke more for her than her angelic voice deserving her name ever was.
Cross could still remember her eyes shining upon him, crystalline blue eyes that lit up before she smiled, and remained clear even when they plunged deep into passion. He loved her eyes, more than anything that was her.
"I hate singing," she once told him; sapphire eyes shone brightly under evening sun. "But I want to be useful… to you."
Cross smiled when he heard her. "I won't leave a beauty like you behind."
She laughed softly, a twinkling sound belonging to an angel, preening her listener like distant tolling bell. "Promise?"
"Sure," he answered smoothly, and promised. "I promise I will never leave you."
Maria knew what a lie was when she saw through one, but she brightened up nonetheless. For him, she thought, for him. "Thank you," she whispered.
One thing that Maria never saw was, Cross did not cross his fingers when he told his lie.
And, even long after her soul left her body, Cross kept his promise. With her eyes sewn and bound shut, because he could never stand her lifeless sapphire stare, Cross took Maria along.
