Breathe. Eyes scanning. Breathe. Chest heaving. Inhale. Feet burning. Exhale. Scan again. My soul was on the edge of a dime. Dead end, turn around. Inhale, exhale, dead end. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
My body was the car, and the fear that resonated in my mind was the asshole speeding through traffic, pedal to the floor. Feet pounded against the asphalt, again and again. Creating echos that followed me, and began to trick me. Were they still there? Was I still being chased? I couldn't process these thoughts whilst inside this maze of bricks and mortar.
Being occupied by my thoughts, I narrowly cut a corner and a searing pain took focus into my right forearm. Blood seeped through the thin cotton pullover and only spread further as my hand made contact on the site. Gasping sharply, I snapped my vision onto the broken remnant of the emergency ladder which leaned on the cold apartment wall. A rogue piece of tapered steel protruding from the ladder had danced a deep line across my arm. Wincing, I kept hold of the laceration and returned to the mission at hand. Escape.
Swiveling abruptly, my legs took action as I took a right, then a left, and another right. The paths and obstacles all blurred together with the soft glow from the apartment windows far above my head. Come on idiot, run faster! DO YOU WANT TO DIE?! Light tears shed themselves away from my eyes as I shook my head violently, ridding myself of the nagging voice. Frantic, I began to look for another way out as I ran.
Can I reach a window? No, they're too high. I could try to climb… who am I kidding, I'm not some damn Aipom! Claps of thunder tore open the sky, allowing drops of water to pelt the earth. However, only a few drops fell as the floodgates gave way and a torrent crashed all around me. Pushing onward, the alley became a waterway in a blink of an eye. Splashing along, my feet got heavier and heavier until I couldn't take it anymore. Breathing hard I leaned on a wall, wishing the world would freeze as I turned my head to the sky and washed away my fears, but it wouldn't. For a moment, I felt at peace. Free. Unfortunately, it didn't last long.
"There's the little fucker! Bash his brains in!" Erupting into a flurry of movement, I surged forward and away from the sick fucks that wanted to mess with a kid. I searched every crack, every crevice hoping it would provide a means of safety. Arriving at the end of that stretch, I swerved into the next alley to see it opened up onto a main road. A grin flashed its way across my face. With freedom at my fingertips I was almost giddy with joy, and all of that hope was shredded as I felt the world tug on my hoodie.
I felt like I was flying, only to collide into the broad side of a dumpster. A cry leaped out of my throat as I made contact with the rusted metal. Pain flared in my mouth and on the top of my forehead. Slumping over all I could taste was metal and a thin flow of blood trailed itself down my face, but luckily not enough to impair my vision. Grasping firmly onto my right arm once more, I sat upright and dreaded what was to come.
Gazing upwards, my fear plateaued at a higher point than I ever thought possible, my pupils enlarged, sweat began to pour down my body. I was scared. The group of eight men approached me, a smug grin plastered on each of their faces. Surrounding me, they made aggressive gestures to show off their assortment of baseball bats, crowbars and knives. If they intended to intimidate me, they sure as hell succeeded.
"Well, what do we have here boys? It seems we've just found a little pest." The owner of the voice sauntered forward. Rain pelted his grotesque figure, as he squatted down in front of my beaten frame. Lightning flashed, but illuminated him just enough that I could get a clear mental image of his face.
He was a freakish man, he was calling me a pest yet his face resembled a Rattata more than mine did. He seemed to be standing at around five foot seven with wisps of brown hair lying upon his bruised head. Tattoos masked his lightly muscled arms, and in his left hand he held a broad hunting knife, and in his right hand… well, he didn't have one. I concluded he wouldn't have been much of a challenge on even terms, but at the moment fairness was lying dead in a ditch. He let go a breath from in between his multitude of cracked teeth and chapped lips, and I recoiled from the foul stench. Disgust filled my mind as I thought why the hell it smelled so bad. Did he have a big ol' bowl of Garbodor shit for breakfast?!
Twirling the knife he leaned back as a creepish smile adorned his face. Tossing the blade from hand to hand, he began to speak.
"Okay freak, we have given you plenty of chances to tell us what we want. But, because you deemed yourself to be uncooperative, we shall just slay your little ass right where you stand! Write a "ransom" letter of sorts, then after the information is received we shall murder the rest of your dysfunctional family. Sound great?" His eyes hardened as his smile straightened into a determined line.
"Rot in hell, Atlas scum." Cold steel pressed against my neck. I would have tried to resist, to escape; but I was far too weak. Accepting my fate, I did nothing. I only thought about my mom. Would she ever forgive me? Forgive me for hating her, even though I shouldn't. For being a worthless shit of a kid that only yelled obscenities at her and treated her like dirt. For not trying. Yet, I felt the world freeze as time was seemingly paused, only for the world to resume and give me fates gift.
Screeching in surprise, he launched backwards as a unknown creature barreled into him. His men all recoiled and stepped back as he landed with a heavy thud and rose to his feet in a fleet of rage. Bellowing a stream of curses, he had a sea of fury in his eyes and rushed forward in a berserk fashion. Dashing forward, the creature swooped to his left, and blurred upwards. Latching onto the man's arm, it's growls were far outclassed by his screams of pain and terror. With a grip of iron, the creature wouldn't let go, even as the man repeatedly bashed its poor body into the brick wall of the apartment building. On the fourth hit, the creature loosened its grasp, followed by dropping to the ground like a newly fallen leaf, and darted past me into the shadows.
"IT FROZE MY BLOODY ARM! KILL THE FUCKER!" Eyes widening, I watched the man swivel around 180 degrees, and he came to discover that his 'gang' left him for dead. Turning to me, he dropped his knife, never breaking eye contact with me as the knife clattered against the wet pavement. It felt like hours passed although it was just seconds until he began to back down the alley, towards the exit.
"One day, I WILL kill you, cause I know you. I know everything about you….Tyson Atlas… all you freaks will DIE one day!" He finished his threatening speech before jogging away. Leaving me in the alley with whatever monster attacked them.
As soon as he was out of sight, I finally exhaled. Having barely breathed throughout the entire occurrence, I rested. My mind then turned to my savior, I scanned my surroundings, but it wasn't anywhere to be found. Yet, it was still here. I knew it was. Pokemon were dangerous, and you rarely saw them this deep in the city. Maybe a wild Starly once and awhile, but nothing like this. Drops of heaven splashed my face as the wave of relief washed over me. I was safe. I am alive.
For now at least. The adrenaline that had been flowing through my veins was making its departure, and in its place was the pain that seemed to be in every bone of my being.
Waiting for my resolve to recharge, I caught movement from behind a dumpster further down the alley. The creature had returned and was moving through the shadows toward me, then stepped into the light. I gasped.
My eyes widened as I gazed upon the Pokemon that were thought to have gone extinct in Sinnoh. The Pokemon tilted its head to the left curtly and looked at me with a quizzical expression, and said one thing that changed my life forever.
"Shinx?"
