Summary: She clutches his hand like it's a lifeline, which in some ways, it is.

Lifeline

A girl cries out in the darkness, and the man muffles her shout. He covers her mouth with his hand. She's rewarded for her silence when he kisses her softly on the lips before rolling away. She clutches his hand like it's a lifeline, which in some ways, it is. This is the only way she knows to be with men, all her life this has been what she's known, what she's been taught.

The man stands, pulling up his trousers in as swift a movement as he did last time.

"Going so soon?"

The man smiles ruefully, grateful that she can't see his face. He tugs on a shirt, fumbling at the buttons, knowing he's probably done it wrong again.

"You know how it works baby, I gotta get back."

The girl sighs. "I know, but it'd be nice if you could stay just this once."

He ignores this comment and reaches for the door. He grasps the handle and pulls it open. Light streams in from the outside; she left the lamp on again. In the sudden brightness he can make out her face, blinking and vulnerable.

"See you baby."

He shuts the door, leaving swiftly.

A tear rolls down her cheek at his abrupt dismissal of her. She lets it fall, admitting to herself the truth.

She was a victim of unrequited love. He saw her as a girl, someone to fool around with. He didn't see her in the same way she saw him.
Brenda was irrevocably in love with Corny Collins.
