Cower
Sam awoke to low, rumbling whimper. As his eyes attempted to register the shift out of sleep, terror-filled moans and panicked, gasping breaths issued forth from the dark. Sam reached out, grappling with the unfamiliar shape of the lamp, finally finding the switch. In the glare of the light, he scanned the room, looking for the source. At first he couldn't see it but then he heard the whispered words…
"No…please…not again…please…" and the choking sobs that followed…
Sam stalked silently to the familiar voice that dispelled the haunting words. He found him cowering in the corner, hidden from view, his whole body shuddering in deep, racking sobs. Sam stooped down, crawling to reach his brother's side. He reached out and lifted him gently, gripping him close to his chest as he rubbed a warm, comforting pattern over his shoulder and back, rocking him and lavishing him with soothing words as he tried to coax his brother out of his Hell-born terror and nightmarish memories. As he held the broken, terrorized man close, Sam wept tears of utter sadness, wishing more than anything in the world he could give his big brother the salvation he so desperately sought and put an end to private Hell on earth that had burned itself inside his harrowed soul, tormenting him without end, slowly but steadily killing him from the inside out…
