Drabble Challenge Entry- Challenge Word= Steam
Silence and shadows…
The lone figure stalked silently down the midnight-dark side street, the humming blare of traffic distant, quelled by the sheer mass of concrete and brick that encased the lonely, rarely traveled pathway… Billowing, hazy clouds of steam flooded out from the iron manholes frequently enough to dispel into a fog, blanketing the area and hiding dangers from sight…As the figure crossed the path of the dim phosphorus street lamp, he felt a presence behind him…The man whirled succinctly in place…nothing… Frowning, he turned and trudged forward in the direction he had been going, the pooling haze beneath the lamplight swirled. For a moment, a roughly human figure was visible. With a low, whispering sigh, it dematerialized and struck out after the silent figure prowling his way through the darkness and fog…
