As the Full Moon Rises
Summary: Remus Lupin has seen a lot of grief- first with the death of James, then Sirius. But Dumbledore? Now that's something new..
--
It was a numb feeling, when I first heard James and Lily were dead. It took a while for the raw truth to set in.
And then came the pain.
I had known James all through my school year, and he stood by me where so many other wizards had fled. Even though I was a werewolf, he still counted me as a friend. Losing him was like losing a piece of my soul.
But, as all numbness does, the feeling passed, leaving me with an empty feeling. I found out that Sirius, my other close friend, had betrayed James and Lily.
And of course, when I came back to Hogwarts to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts, I found Sirius. I found the truth. Peter, yet another of my school friends, was the true betrayer. He was lost to me. I spared no more emotion for him.
But a year ago now, Bellatrix Lestrange took Sirius from me. There was no numbness. I could only feel agony, not unlike every month when I transform into the wolf that is also me. But this was emotional, not physical.
The pain was just as bad.
"Remus?" the voice of Nymphadora Tonks brought me out of my reverie. "Is something wrong?"
What a thing to ask me, I thought dryly, just after Harry had told us that Dumbledore was dead. Trying without success to mask my grief, I smiled softly. "Everything's fine, Nymphadora."
But it wasn't. I couldn't believe it. My old headmaster, the greatest wizard I ever knew, was dead.
Inside my mind, the full moon arose.
