On ANBU pay, Kakashi was used to living a comfortable life. He wasn't wealthy, but he never had to worry about funds. With his left hand tangled in his mess of silver hair and his right grasping a disappointing sheet of paper, he wondered where that went. Life insurance had been offered to him when the signature swirl was tattooed on his arm. He'd denied it, because there was no one any debts would be left to.
He didn't think Sakura would have been dumb enough to refuse it, too.
She had a ton of people to worry about. Her family was still alive, along with her friends and coworkers. Of course, her mother had little to fuss over. And Naruto's only woes were over the loss of one of his closest friends. Neither of them had to bear the brunt of the blow. The funds. As her husband, Kakashi had to pay for everything - the coffin, the service. Even the cost of adding her name to the familiar memorial stone. She'd never let him spend a dime on her until now. Not that she had any say in the matter.
His next four missions wouldn't cover the costs. Five or six couldn't even fill the huge gap in his wallet. Chances were he would find himself in debt for a long time. He set the paper down on the table. As he sighed with the painful realization, a light breeze blew outside. Floating on the gust was a single cherry blossom. It drifted in front of him and fell onto the bill.
For a moment, he could only stare at it. It almost hurt to look at, knowing all too well it's namesake. But at the same time, he couldn't bring himself to brush it away. So instead, he picked it up and brought it over to the mantle and laid it there, where it was less likely to be seen, but it would remain mostly safe. When he sat back down to examine the bill once more, he could have sworn two zeroes had entirely disappeared from the end of the number.
