Second Wing
A flash of light and a series of mechanical clicks filled the room. Fee watched as a pair of wings grew from his big brother's back: one made of feathers and bone, the other of steel and glass. Georg smiled at the sight, his eyes bright with a silent pride in his work and his adopted grandchild. Kalas beat his new wings experimentally and Fee watched as the older boy's face lit up with uncharacteristic joy. Fee leaped into the air, propelled by happiness for his brother. No one would ever be able to call Kalas a one-winged freak ever again! Maybe one day Kalas would even learn to fly!
Then, just for a moment, some dark little part of Fee's soul curled up with bitterness.
