I said we run away, go somewhere we'd never been before just so we know there's a world outside and we're not the only ones in the universe. If that turned out to be true my whole life would have been a waste.
We would just walk straight until we found a town that everyone said was just outside the canopy of fog which closed in our little place and made everyone feel like they were suffocating.
"It's only like 2 miles away!"
I dragged you out and you were whining about abandoning your precious game systems.
"We can't just run away like this."
"It's not for forever, just for a little while so we can know what it feels like to be free"
So we walked in a straight line for what felt like so long on the side of a straight road lined with poppies and felt so far away. We passed a place at the edge of town, a cluster of bars named things like "The red mouse" and one dinky church. I thought we were close then. The sun lit up the light sprinkling of freckles on your face.
It took us a good 20 minutes to lose site of the church and we kept on walking for another half hour before it started to get cold and dark and the fatigue sunk in. We stopped to call Rodger from a long curve in the road, we'd been walking for 2 and a half hours and still had no proof than anywhere but there existed but distant memories and blurred faces that very well could have been the stuff of dreams. The funny thing is that the town was 12 miles away and we had only made it 6.
2 years later I tried to run away again, but this time I never called for a ride home.
I left you a letter on your nightstand telling you that I hoped you wouldn't fade away like the dreams from far away places and shoved one of your old shirts into my backpack.
Did you know that there really is a world outside Winchester? It's one with evils and crimes, you know. Did you know that I hope you don't fade away? Did you lose your freckles? Did you ever make it out? Do you still think I'm real?
I walked on that straight road and made it to the next town, then to the next continent.
Did you know that sometimes I hope that you'll go down that road and make it to the next town and try to find me?
