Chapter one: College Bound.
I woke up to the bright light of the sun streaming through the window. I still wasn't used to that. Not after living in Forks for two summers. My mom and Phil traveled and I was cursed to spend time without the sun. But I would soon be eighteen, and then off to college. After graduating a year before the rest of the people my age I was gone. I was going to go to Dartmouth. I couldn't wait until I was on my own. I had gotten a full scholarship and couldn't wait.
The warm shower felt good against my skin and then I dressed in a tank and shorts. I loved being back in Arizona. I stepped outside into the heat of the late August sun. I had started my school countdown five days ago, and now there was only three days left. I went to the library to return the few books that I had taken out two days before. I was a bookworm. One year for my birthday my mom got me a card and on the front it hard a little green worm with glasses and it was looking at a book. I got so mad at my mom. She just loved torturing me.
I had already gotten my dorm assignment, and my class schedule. I had already met my roommate. Her name is Alice and she reminds me of a pixie. She's short. I'd say about 4'11 and she has short, spiky black hair, and she is really hyper. The one time I met her I could tell she was into fashion. She had on Chanel this Chanel that. I had also realized she came from money. But she was the nicest rich person I had ever met.
For the rest of the day I sat outside and just soaked up sun. Not that it would matter much I mean my porcelain, ivory skin didn't absorb the sunlight. Of course when I did try to tan I would just end up as red as a strawberry in late July.
Around four o' clock I heard tires on the driveway. I realized that my mom was going to bombard me with more questions about school. Again. My mom went and took pottery classes
four days a week. She was bored and I could tell, it wouldn't be long now until she wanted to do something else. School didn't start until after Labor Day and being around her kindergarteners would really help her when I was at college.
I walked in the back door that led to the kitchen.
"Bella, do you have everything you need for college?" My mom asked this question, again. She asked it about three times a day.
"Mom, the answer still hasn't changed. I am completely ready and I am leaving in two days. And I will call you every time I stop it is gonna take me a while to get there. I started to make dinner, I wasn't going to go all out and be fancy I was just gonna make spaghetti and meatballs. Phil would be home in less than 20 minutes so I only had that long to make dinner. My mom couldn't really cook well. A lot of what she made wasn't edible.
"How is that little pixie you're rooming with?"
"You mean Alice. She's good; I talked to her last night. She wanted to make sure all our colors coordinated. Thankfully they do. My bed spread was brown, pink, and white, the comforter was pink and brown striped and in the pink there were more white stripes and in the brown there were with polka dots. It was just by sheer coincidence Alice got the same one. She had said that there was just something she loved about brown and pink together.
After dinner I went upstairs and fell asleep. For the next two days I spent every waking hour packing everything into my new car. It was dark green, a Gm Mercury. I was hoping that by leaving eight days early I would have enough time to make it to school. I was guaranteed at least a five day drive. For me, at least. I liked to take my time and stop frequently.
I headed to bed early on my last day in Arizona so I could wake up around four to start my journey. I woke my mom up to tell her goodbye and then I was off.
Alice POV
I was aggravated again. Esme wouldn't let get a new wardrobe for school. Plus seeing both Emmett and Edward were also attending Dartmouth my parents deciding that they would move to New Hampshire. Even though Emmett and I weren't related he had lived with us since he was sixteen. After his mom died and his dad abandoned him Edward talked to Esme and Carlisle and got them to let him live with us.
Edward was the real reason behind my bad mood. He had locked himself in his room since that little nasally voiced bitch told him that she hated him. Sarah was so mean to him. It's not as if they were even dating. He just told her no. I mean I know that most of the girls at our high school had had crushes on him but seriously just because he wouldn't have sex with her she told everyone that he was a virgin and so be it, he was. But it didn't really matter that both me and Emmett were to. It was just the way we were raised.
Yeah, both Emmett and I had come close to but that's just because… well, I don't really know. I didn't even like the guy. I'm glad I stopped it before it got too close. With Emmett it was because he was drunk. But thankfully my little brother and I saved him. Edward was my little brother but only by a year. When we were younger Esme had started to teach him how to read and how to do simply math problems and what not. He was only three. At school they thought that he was too advanced and skipped a grade.20He skipped first grade and went straight to second grade with me. He was the smartest person I knew.
My new Lexus was fabulous. Emmett and I were driving on my car and Edward in his. He needed the time alone. Emmett was going to spend half the time with me and the other half with Edward. We were driving from Florida to New Hampshire. Straight up Route 95.
I was going to bed early I would be heading out early tomorrow. Edward had already packed his Mercedes and I had already packed my Lexus. Emmett's bags were in both my car and Edward's. Esme and Carlisle had offered to buy Emmett a car of his own but he said he felt bad enough letting them pay for college.
I headed upstairs to the third floor; Edward's room. When I got there I heard him talking on his cell phone. So I sat down against the wall to wait for him to finish up. I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but I did.
"No, it's true. Molly, no I don't. No, Molly, if I had wanted to, I would have with Sarah. There was so much venom in his voice I let him calm down a bit before I knocked.
"Edward, it's Alice can I come in?"
"Do whatever you want, Alice."
I opened his door and smiled. He was sitting on his bed with his head in his hands. I had the urge to comfort him.
"I know you heard the conversation."
"I did, I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to. So Molly was offering the same thing Sarah did."
"Yup. I can't wait to be away from them. They are so immature." He stood up and punched the wall.
"They are immature. I can't wait for you to meet my roommate. She's really nice."
"Alice, I love you, but the last thing I want you to do is to set me up with some chick who will feel sorry for me."
"Edward, I never even mentioned you to her. I met her once when we went to Arizona for the week. When I went shopping she met me and we talked for a bit."
"How did you get her contact info?"
"Her email was on the paper."
"Alice,"
"Fine, I called the school and asked about it. And, well, the guy at the desk said he didn't really work there and he looked it up for me."
"Wow, Alice you never stop amazing me."
"Edward, we need to talk to you." Esme called up the stairs.
We headed downstairs. There was no furniture left in the house except for the beds, so we all sat on the floor. Carlisle came in followed by Esme.
"Um, Alice sweetie we need to talk to Edward, just Edward." Carlisle said.
"Dad, she can stay she knows everything that goes on around here, anyway."
"Okay, it's your choice, though. Well Edward you'll never guess who I saw at the hospital today."
"Who? I really don't want to guess." He slumped up against the wall.
"Sarah Albright."
"So?" Edward pressed.
"Edward, she's pregnant."
"Okay, and how does this relate to me?"
"She said that the baby is yours."
"That's not possible." Edward looked at me.
"Why not?" Esme pressed.
"Esme, it's not possible. Edward's still… You know, umm, innocent." I said not wanting to embarrass him.
"And how do you know this?" Esme asked.
"Because Sarah just announced it to the whole school, when Edward wouldn't have sex with her. And also do you really think that Edward would do something like that?"
"Well, no," Carlisle spoke. "Well, my apologies, Edward."
"It's fine. Whatever." He stood up and went back upstairs.
"Is that why he's been so down?" Esme asked.
"Mhmm." Then I too stood up and went to bed.
Bella POV
Then on my last day driving I got a call on my cell phone.
"Hello?"
"Bella, its Alice."
"Oh hey, what's up?"
"Would you be up to meeting up me as soon as you get to the college?"
"Sure, no problem. I'll be there in about two hours."
"Really? That's great! I'll be there soon and I'll start setting some things up in our dorm."
"Okay, great,"
"Hey, my friend Emmett is trying to sneak food in my car. I'll call you later."
"Okay, bye," And the line went dead.
For the rest of the drive I sang along with all the songs on my iPod and then when I pulled into the school I went to the registry and found my dorm. I brought most of my stuff in and then called Alice.
We agreed to meet at the coffee shop on campus. As soon as I entered I saw the spiky-haired pixie sitting at the far right corner tapping her cell phone on the table with one hand and the other was under her chin. I walked right over and sat down.
"Hey Alice, you look sad what's wrong?"
"Nothing, well I shouldn't concern you in this. It wouldn't be right."
"Oh okay, well let me know if you change your mind."
"I will. So how was your drive?"
"Long, and tiring, yours?"
"Same except I had my friend Emmett to entertain me." She looked at the door. "Oh wow speak of the devil and he shall appear. Here he comes."
"How old is he?" he was tall and had bands of muscle up and down his arms, two of me put together wouldn't equal one of him.
"Oh, he's only 19. Same as me, how are you Bella?"
"I'm gonna be 18 in a few days."
"So you're like my brother. He skipped a grade."
"I guess so. So are you and Emmett dating?"
"Hell, no." A booming laugh said from behind me. I jumped and he laughed harder. "Alice and Edward are pretty much family to me. I've been living with them since I was 16. Hey speaking of Edward where he is?"
"Talking to this guy he met." Alice answered, but I could tell her mind was preoccupied.
"Oh, really?" Emmett sounded surprised.
"Not like that Emmett, it's his roommate."
"Oh well you never know, I mean he's never had a girlfriend and all."
"EMMETT! WHATS YOUR PROBLEM?!" Alice screamed. The blonde guy behind the counter stood up and came over.
"Is everything okay? You seem really worked up." The guy asked.
"Yeah I'm fine, I guess my friend just got me aggravated. Oh sorry I'm Alice, this is Bella and this idiot is Emmett." she gestured to each of us and in turn she put out her hand. He shook her and smiled.
"I'm Jasper." Alice smiled, Jasper looked toward the door. "That blonde is my sister her name is Rosalie. But I don't know who that is she's talking to." Alice gasped. And I could see why Rosalie was perfect in every way.
"That's my younger brother Edward." She seemed so shocked. Both Edward and Rosalie walked toward us. Alice stood up and took Edward aside. I could hear them murmuring but I couldn't pick out specific words, and I didn't try. Instead I asked Emmett a question.
"Emmett, Alice seems upset. Do you know why?"
"Before, or now?" He whispered, pulling a chair up next to me and sitting.
"Earlier, when I first came in. The one time I met her she was so hyper and energetic and now she seems lifeless."
"It's Edward. He'll kill me for this, but whatever, he's a virgin and this girl named Sarah tried to seduce him but he wouldn't have sex with her so she told the whole town pretty much that he was a virgin, then she ends up being pregnant and she says its Edward's kid. So we're all really stressed out over it."
"Oh I'm sorry. I didn't know, I shouldn't have asked." Alice and Edward walked back over to where we were sitting.
"Edward this is Bella. Bella this is Edward." Alice introduced us. I held out my hand and Edward shook it.
"Hey Edward it's nice to meet you." I smiled at him. He looked really stressed out. His hair was in disarray like he had been running his fingers through it. "Alice, I think I'm gonna head back to our room. Do want to come with me?"
"Sure Bella, bye guys, see you later. Oh! Hey do you guys want to do dinner tonight? I saw this really cute little restaurant earlier." They all said yes, including Jasper and Rosalie, and on our way out I saw Rosalie watching Emmett and smiling. We were heading back to our dorm when Alice said.
"You didn't give me an answer, are you coming to the restaurant too?"
"Sure, I guess. I don't know anyone else and I haven't had a chance to really go meet anyone so sure. Oh Alice, did I see a glint in your eyes when Jasper said he'd come?"
"Bella, please don't say anything." Her face was twisted with horror.
"Alice I wouldn't do that to you." I reassuringly said.
"Oh Bella I forgot to mention I heard what Emmett told, don't say anything to Edward about it. Please, I will be at your power for a mon-" I cut her off.
"Alice I won't say a thing. I swear."
