He watches the scene unfold before his eyes, a happy little family exchanging gifts. Mum and Dad and little dark-haired baby all smiling and looking bright and merry, like you're meant to at Christmastime. A cheery little light in this dark, dismal war, and it makes him feel sick to his very core.

Christmas is meant to be a happy time, when families get together and wear silly hats and eat turkey and exchange gifts, really just enjoying each other's company. Christmas is supposed to be white and cheery and perfect, everything he never could and never would be.

Lily laughs at some ridiculously not funny joke James told her, both the slightest bit drunk on eggnog, and he wants to scream at her and tell her that it's just not funny and how could anything be funny when there is a fucking war going on just outside their door? He seriously considers it for a second and makes a move to stand up, but quickly settles back down on his armchair and ignores Remus's questioning glance. Let them celebrate this dead, pointless holiday, no matter how stupid or ignorant they are being. He'd never understand them, but he has always hated Christmas anyway, so more power to them.

Christmas is always black for Sirius, no matter how much snowfall comes to pass.
