Chapter 1 - The First Day
Stacie crept into the brunette's room, despite the sign saying to keep out, only to find Brett still asleep. Realising that she could have some fun with this, Stacie decided a plan to get back at all the pranks her older brother had done to her. Slowly, Stacie crept towards Brett's bed, stopping only to wait for any signs of movement from the boy. When she finds none, Stacie climbs on top of his bed and sits on his back with one swift move.
"Wakey, wakey Brett. It's time for school! You need to get up!" Stacie shouted into his ear, earning her a groan in response. She repeated her actions until Brett wakes up. Finding the extra weight on his back, Brett bucks his back up instantly, flinging Stacie to the bottom of the bed. Stacie turns to face a laughing Brett he soon gets up from his warm cocoon of blankets and towards the bathroom.
"You really need to work on your technique Stace," Brett spoke through a yawn causing Stacie to giggle. "I could've hurt you."
"You needed to get up. At the rate that you were moving, we would've been late. It's the first day of our junior year, aren't you excited?" Stacie squealed with too much enthusiasm for 6:30 am.
"Oh my god, I'm so excited," sarcasm laced his voice. "I don't even want to go. It's not like I'm going to learn anything I don't already know. I don't understand why I can't just quit," Brett responded while pulling on his favourite baseball tee.
"Come on Brett, we've only got a year and then we're free. You know I can't do this without you. You also know how dad would feel if you left." Stacie spoke as she follows Brett into the bathroom while he brushes his teeth.
Brett stops brushing his teeth to turn around and face Stacie. He can see how much she needs him and sighs. "Fine, but once high school is done, you and I are leaving. We will never look back to this place." Brett promises. Stacie looks into his eyes can see that he means it. She runs towards him with her arms open, he freezes upon contact but soon relaxes as he realises how much she needed the hug.
Stacie pulls away from the hug and looks at him with a big smile, "Thank you." Stacie responds honestly. She turns around and heads to her room to get herself ready. Brett returns to getting sorted for school.
The start of a school year is never fun no matter who you are, whether it's the nerd, the athlete, the queen bees, the goths or the new one. Though the year always starts the same, friends reconnecting, summer flings ending messily, the only thing that changes are peoples appearances. No-one went through a greater change than Brett Mitchell. Despite still being on the short side of the height spectrum, no-one could argue that the once scrawny brunette boy wasn't hot. His previously untamed long locks now styled and trimmed short, exposing the steely blue of his gaze. His clothes are more alternative than they once were. His now-signature skinny black jeans and a tight-fitting baseball tee.
As Brett walked through the doors, most of his peer's eyes were locked and jaws were on the floor. Almost everyone could not believe just how much the nerdy kid had changed. Brett refused to acknowledge the attention, refusing to show them that he knew they were staring. He continued to make his way to his locker, getting out a notepad and placing it in his bag before closing his locker. Brett walked to class as the bell echoed throughout the corridors.
Once in the classroom, Brett made his way towards the back of the class, his usual seat waiting for him, secluded from the public. When he got is gear out for the class he looked up to see the usual groups talking and ignoring the others in the class. The teacher organises the inevitably boring powerpoint for the class as he continues his glance about the room. He let out a sigh as he waited for the next five minutes until the lecture started. Despite the class being boring Brett remained the most focused in the class, which was not saying much as he already understood the topic. The people were much more interesting to him, as he got to have a look at who they truly were, not the person they were pretending to be in public. Some were on their phones, others were whispering to each other, while the select few actually got onto the task that had been issued. Brett internally laughed at the class. He knew he would only ever be accepted if he pretended to be what he wasn't. Normal.
Another forty-five minutes passed until the bell rung. Being the anti-social he always was Brett pulled out his phone and set up a playlist, settling an earphone into his left ear leaving the right one free in the unlikely event that someone needed him and made his way to his next class. Which much to his disgust was History but you do what you got to do to make your father happy right? Those next 1 hour and 40 minutes were some of the longest in his life (Of course he just had to get a double history on the first day). Luckily break was next which meant he got to just relax in the stairwell, gaining another few leers but was too engrossed in his music to care about it at that point.
As he made his way outside Brett was pulled into a brief hug from his sister as they pulled away from the hug he smirked towards the tall brunette boy that stood behind her.
"Not that I don't like seeing you but I did see you this morning what's with the affection Stace?" Brett questioned
"Can't I hug my brother without any reason?" she spoke innocently
"No" he stated bluntly gaining a stifled laugh from Stacie "So, what did you get up to over the holiday Jesse" referring to the brunette who towered over him.
"You know me, I spent it in the cinema. What about you guys? Anything worthy of the Mitchell siblings reputation?" he smiled and spoke the last question directly at Stacie who smiled and looked at the floor before her blush could become visible to anyone.
"I don't know about Stacie over here but I didn't do much just created some mixes and spent some time with someone." the final revelation sparked another smirk upon his face as he remembered the memories of the Summer. And he knew it would drive his friend crazy not hearing about this before.
"Anyone special?" His mouth matching Brett's with a smirk leaving a smiling Stacie to enjoy the antics between her brother and best friend.
The bell rang and Brett swiftly smiled and sent his 'see ya laters' to Jesse and Stacie and made his way towards his next class counting down to lunch all while listening to his music and making notes on possible song combinations in his book as well as a couple class orientated notes here and there.
The time came for lunch and Brett sat down at his usual empty table waiting for his sister. When Stacie finally came into view she was speaking to a bubbly red-head and the one and only, Aubrey Posen. He kept watching the girls' interactions his eyes kept focusing on the red-head, he was snapped out of his thought by Jesse slamming a tray down on the table with a laugh as he was punched on the arm by Brett who was also trying to stop himself from laughing. Their laughter was soon stopped when Brett looked up to see the three girls looking at them; Stacie with a smile while chuckling, the red-head who seemed to be looking only at Brett with a mega-watt smile and finally Aubrey with her signature glare, that would turn anyone into stone, but that did not deter the boy as he sent a smug smirk her way before returning to the red-head.
As Stacie made her way back to the boys seated at the table leaving the two girls to continue to their own table surrounded by herds of people, before sitting down and pulling a brown paper bag out and starting to eat her lunch without saying a word. The occasional glances up to see the two brunette boys talking in-depth about something only they would deem important. Lunch eventually ended and they all went their own way with promises of a meeting point after school.
As the last period of the day crept closer, Brett became more agitated as one of his least favourite class was next. He made his way towards the classroom and sat down at the back as he usually did not pay any attention to anyone until the teacher interrupted the class with an announcement when a certain red-head walked into the room with the same smile that Brett couldn't help but smile a little at before replacing it with a smirk. The red-head introduced herself to the class and made her way to the only empty seat which is situated next to Brett before smiling at him before sitting down at her new desk.
"Nice to see you again Brett" Brett's smile grew as images of the Summer flashed before him.
"Hey Chloe, I didn't know you would be going here" His confusion came through in his voice but there was a hint of happiness present.
"I didn't either but my dad got a promotion so my family moved here a week ago but you would've known that had you answered any of my texts I sent over the last two weeks" That sparked both of them to frown at the memories although both frowns were for very different reasons. Chloe, seeing as Brett would not continue the conversation, turned around to face the front and continued to pretend to pay attention to the class but remembering the heartbreak she went through when the all of her texts were ignored all because of the boy to her right.
Brett sat there remembering the reason as to why he could not answer yet knew that he could not tell the girl that haunted his greatest dreams without her running. Instead, he sat there in his own mind space taking a few glances only to see Chloe paying attention to her work which he respected yet was hurt by.
The rest of the school day went that way neither saying anything to one another yet both silently and sneakily looking to the other one longing for the other. Both hurt by the other for different reasons one of heartbreak and the other of guilt.
When the final bell rang Brett hastily made his way to find his sister only to see the raven-haired girl talking to the one person he wished he could speak to, Chloe, her smile almost blinding as the girls were laughing. Nothing he could he would think worthy of her. Stacie finally spotted Brett with a sorry and a gesture towards the brunette to which Chloe and Aubrey both look and their smiles instantly drop when Stacie starts walking away from them. Aubrey sneered and Chloe gave a saddened smile to which Brett sent back her way. The two pairs made their own ways out of the school with Brett and Stacie heading towards the carpark and Chloe and Aubrey heading towards the small wooded area that surrounded the back pathway.
Stacie gave Brett a small smile as she wraps her arm around his shoulders as they walk towards the car realising how awkward this year was going to be. No amount of apologies will get Chloe to forgive Brett without telling the truth yet Brett knew that Chloe wouldn't like it. Who could love someone who couldn't even stand up for themselves?
