I.
There was a fairy tale called Snow White that she remembers reading when she was young. She was so proud, so happy that she finished a book by herself, and she ran to the brothers, hoping to show off a bit.
They smiled at her, hiding a thick alchemy text behind their backs. She started to tell them about her story, and they spent that afternoon talking about knights in shining armor saving the princess.
Edward laughs it off now, as an adult, one who has seen too much of the world to believe in fairy tales and a happily ever after.
"There is no such thing as princesses or knights in shining armor. There is only alchemy and science. Nothing else is real."
She wished she were a princess then, and wished that he was her knight. She doesn't wish that now.
Now she wishes she were the knight in shining armor to save her prince from the darkness of the world, so he will believe in a happily ever after with her.
II.
If Winry were a color, he thought to himself once, he'd like to believe her to be white, a pure white, without any impurities. Her world is white and black, there are no gray's in between. She hasn't seen enough of the world to believe otherwise. He'd like her to stay that way.
No matter how hard he tries, he doesn't see the black that he brings home with him, and that Winry is no longer the pure white he'd like her to be.
III.
Al has always liked watch clouds. She remembers that when they were children, and they'd identify objects in the sky. Even now, as a suit of armor, he enjoys it.
Ed doesn't have the patience to cloud watch; he uses the time to sleep.
Winry once woke him up in the middle of the afternoon. His eyes opened and he sees beauty in front of him. The white of the clouds surrounded her head, and he was unaware of anything else.
Ed still doesn't watch the clouds, but he likes to pretend he's asleep.
IV.
Some scars aren't seen. No matter how much you treat it, it simply does not disappear.
Edward knows this. Some wounds are simply too deep to ever heal.
(Al without a body;
Their failed transmutation;
The lives lost…)
Winry doesn't see them, but she knows they're there.
Sometimes, he wishes that she didn't know.
And sometimes, she wishes that he doesn't care that she does.
V.
She watches him turn to leave, with a wave back.
He goes forward without ever looking back. She doesn't see his face; just the back of his head, with his braid gently swaying side to side and the back of his red jacket.
He's scared that if he looks back, it would be harder for him to leave.
Maybe he doesn't know her as well as she'd like him to, but it's okay to her. That's because she fell for him a long time ago. And having mutual feelings will work everything out in the end.
So for now, she'll watch, and she sees more than he thinks she does.
She sees the shades of white of his alchemy, and sees shades of red of his sacrifice and his sins.
She believes still, in fairy tales.
He will one day be her knight. But for now, she'll settle for saving him.
