A young girl was sitting on a door step, sniffling. She was trying not to cry at the broken object in front of her. It was a small doll; a rag doll. Old and battered, but it remained Nephry's favorite doll.

Why would such an old doll be her favorite?

Why, it was made for her… by her mother; the mother who died.

The arm was beginning to fall off and its leg was flattened. She sat there, crying, until someone came out. Nephry heard his voice and quickly wiped her tears, hiding her doll.

"Nephry, why were you crying?" Jade asked.

"I wasn't crying." She replied, steadfast and brave, but her slightly raspy voice gave her away a little.

"Your eyes are puffy and that proves it, Nephry. What happened?" Jade asked, sitting down beside her. Jade was quite the sadist as a child as he is now, although he was kind to Nephry. Whenever the adults would scold them for playing, Nephry would hide behind Jade while he convinced them to go away.

He always cared for her so much. Was it to keep up a good appearance, or because the other was truly their only family left?

"I broke the doll mom made for me…" Nephry answered, pulling out her hidden doll, torn and ripped. Jade took it, examining it.

"It's pretty bad… Hm… I think I can fix it." Jade replied, looking at Nephry with a small smile on his face.

"Really?!" Nephry exclaimed, excited to have her doll fixed and ready to go.

"I believe so. It'll take a while though." Jade replied.

"Thank you brother!" She cried, giving him a hug. Despite his inability to understand what it meant to strip one of their life, it did not signify she didn't care for him.

"Nephry, come here." Jade commanded and dumbfounded, Nephry went after her brother into the room he beckoned her to.

"Yes?" She asked, cocking a head. He smiled and told her to close her eyes and open her palms. Nephry did so, trusting her brother's instructions. She felt something soft in her palm and Jade allowed her to open her eyes.

"My doll!" Nephry exclaimed, hugging it. She proceeded to hug her brother next.

"Thank you, brother!" She said once again.

It was a few years later, Nephry realized that the doll given to her that day was a fake. The real one was still torn up and the one her hands that day was something replicated to look perfect.

Authoress Notes The End. Sleep for me. By the way, the Peony Gaiden really did say the Nephry hid behind Jade's back.
