Fen was a Seawing.
She knew that her name suggested a Mudwing, and she was quite sensitive about it.
Fen was a small dragon, her teal scales had a glint of a coral, and her light up scales were shaped like leopard spots on her wings. She was just past dragonet age, and she couldn't wait to be in the Jade Academy.
Bobbing her head underwater again, she swam around, in the shallow cove that she was in, talking to herself in aquatic.
Another Seawing popped up beside her.
"It's not good to be talking to yourself." he said, gurgling water through his mouth.
His name was Rockpool, he was her older brother.
"I know, but most of the time I feel so lonely, and you're always training with the palace guard."
Rockpool cringed.
"But I have to train, or else Queen Coral might not let me into the guard."
Fen growled, and a screen of bubbles rose between her and her brother.
"Why do you even wanna be in Queen Coral's guard. It'll be Queen Tsunami and a few years anyway."
Rockpool laughed and gestured to the surface of the water.
They both rose and he tackled Fen in the shallows.
"Do not speak of such rebellious behaviour Fen! One would think you were a good for nothing Skywing!"
He impersonated their mother's nagging voice perfectly, and even her habit of wagging her talon while she talked was paid tribute.
Fen laughed and wriggled out of Rockpools claws, they chased one another down the bay for a while before laying down on the warm sand, exhausted.
Fen looked back on her memory with a sigh. She missed her brother. And moreover, she was nervous. She had finally gotten into Jade academy, and he had his dream job of being a guard. But now they never saw each other. Well, almost never.
Where was she? In hustle and bustle of the world, she felt like an island that stayed still, even as the slow decay of time ate at her bones, she felt no different to the young dragonet who had played endlessly in the surf of the waves that crashed against the summer palace.
Now here she was. Finally old enough to lie her dreams, and wishing she was younger.
She needed more time. Time was something that she would never grasp the concept of.
Spend a minute not moving and it felt like an hour. Spend an hour with Rockpool and it felt like a minute.
Ahh, the irony. How it burned. Almost as hot as the tears trickling down her snout.
Fen scowled and wiped away her tears. Here she was, losing her cool again. What was with her today and embarrassing herself? She was a student of Jade academy! Not a prepubescent emotional bundle.
She had to get a grip. Or get a life.
