[Wish]

After Sarah had returned, birthday cakes were never the same again.

She would see the beautiful cake, golden candlelight illuminating the expectant faces of family and friends around her.

"Make a wish, Sarah!"

A voice that only she could hear, drawling in her mind. A sudden breeze stirring the curtains that only she noticed.

"Yes, Sarah, make a wish. We're all waiting."

A pasted smile on her face before blowing out the candles. Wishes are dangerous.

"Such a pity."

Some years she successfully avoids a birthday cake. Sometimes she can't.

"Yes, Sarah, make a wish. We're all waiting."

[Dream]

Toby, an adult now, sometimes dreams of his sister Sarah.

She's happy and her elaborate outfits sometimes shine like the sun, or gleam like the moon. Sarah is usually in a throne room with an unusual looking man with long and spiky fair hair, flowing clothes and a dangerous air about him. This man often smiles at Sarah.

There is something familiar about the throne room, the man… but that way lies madness. After all, aren't the dreams Toby's way of dealing with the tragedy?

Sarah disappeared a few years ago while hiking in a forest… and never seen again.

[Kiss]

Sarah told herself she had forgotten the Labyrinth. However, one day the whorls on her plain wooden bedroom door rearrange to form a whimsical yet pleading face.

Unable to resist, Sarah opened the door.

She was back in the Labyrinth, but it was quiet... bleached of colour. A scattering of dry leaves drew her attention to a stone figure –Ludo – with a look of alarm frozen on his face.

Upset, Sarah found herself heading for the castle. Jareth would be fine, she told herself.

He was a statue too, angry and despairing.

Sarah gently brushed his stone lips with hers.

[Found]

Sarah had told Jareth he had no power over her, but back home she nevertheless still felt watched by him.

The white owl she always saw when she looked out of a window at night… no matter where she was. The laughter she sometimes heard while in a city crowd. Familiar. Mocking.

I can watch you, Sarah.

She cut her hair and dyed it a light brown… eventually she moved to another city. Sarah felt safe, until it started happening there too.

Sarah became a travel writer in the end, going from place to place.

She says she likes it.

[Dance]

Sarah is at a friend's party, dancing with her boyfriend Robert. She's enjoying herself.

(She doesn't think about that dance she had years ago, in the Labyrinth)

Robert is pleasant and fun loving. He hasn't stood on her feet yet, which is good.

(She doesn't think about when He danced with her, graceful and dangerous)

Sarah's outfit is nice but not too eye-catching.

(She tells herself she had felt dressed up like in a doll in that elegant ballgown)

Robert has talked about her meeting his parents soon. He is nice. Safe. She doesn't fear him.

(But he isn't Jareth)

[Surrender]

"I've come back to stay," Sarah says firmly, mingled hope and wariness in her eyes.

Jareth had imagined countless times how things would go if there was a chance – the slightest chance – that Sarah would come back to him.

He would be scornful, he would demand her complete surrender to him.

But now, with Sarah here before him, a tall and captivating adult, he has to admit the truth.

The only surrender will be his... indeed, his heart has done so now, gladly.

"Forever?" he asks, unable to hide his hope.

Sarah smiled warmly.

"Forever."
