Love, Lost...

I don't own FF8, nor it's characters. If I did I'd be drowning in a pool of my own money right now, not writing stories for internet junkies... Enjoy...

The long warrior stood atop the might Balamb cliffs. As a biting cold wind moved up the steep hillside and whipped up around the young man's body, he heard the distant sounds of birds screeching out to the endless oceans of the earth. "It has been too long since I last enjoyed this mighty view," Squall thought as he turned around to see Rinoa standing there with that girlish smile and look in her eyes that showed him that at least someone cared for him.

"What do you think you're..." Squall started.

"Doing? Why I'm looking for you silly." Rinoa interrupted as gleefully and giddily as ever.

Squall stood there, coldly staring into her eyes. She was hiding something, and he knew it. Rinoa cocked her head to the left as she walked up to Squall the way she always did. As she stood in front of him, still smiling away, she raised her right hand to just below the crook of his neck. Rinoa pointed her finger at him, as if to blame him of all his wrongs, and traced it slowly down his silky white shirt she had seen him wear ever since the second time met, on the Forest Owls train. She moved her finger over his powerful chest and around the Griever pendant. Rinoa traced her finger around the pendant, just before opening her hand and wrapping her arms around his waist and pulling him close. "Why don't you ever hold me close, like you did on the Ragnorok? I wish moments like that would never end, but with you they never begin." Rinoa said as Squall wrapped his arm around her shoulders. With his one free hand he lifted her chin so he could look into her eyes. He opened his mouth so he could comfort her, seeking the words in his mind. But before he could even start, Selphie and Irvine ran up yelling and screaming and waving their arms in the air. When they finally reached Squall and Rinoa, Selphie was almost dying of exhaustion. Irvine blurts out," Squall, man. Come quick, something's going on at the Garden!"

And that was that... Squall and the others ran off, leaving Rinoa to sit and weep. She knew it, because of Squall's position in life, she would never be able to truly love him.
