Disclaimer: I don't own the Mentalist or any of its characters.
A/N: This scene popped into my head after watching 1x09 ... so.. this takes off on that note (I've only watched up until epidsode 13... so... I guess this doesn't count as a spoiler haha).
Lisbon reads Jane his Miranda Rights.
You have the right to remain silent.
I can see it in her eyes. Lisbon did never believe that I was serious. But, there he was. Lying tied up on this butcher's table. His blood still bright red and flowing. A fresh kill.
Her narrowed eyes darkened. It showed that all her expectations of me had just disappeared. Those high standards had just been shattered with the same sound as a heart break. I felt ashamed.
Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
She had warned me that it would end up like this. But, I always knew how it would end.
Lisbon wanted him tried in the court of law. I just wanted justice. How can we possibly achieve that with the way our system works? He'll walk away after two, maybe four years in prisonā¦. That's it.
Few people feel truly sorry for the evils they've committed in their lifetime.
You have the right to speak to an attorney.
I shook my head silently as she cuffed my wrists behind my back, voicing her disappointment clearly through her eyes and how she now stood.
I've turned into a common criminal. A murderer.
I wished I could've swayed her point of view, as I did with so many others. Allow her to see this for what it is, justice⦠and not as the world see it, revenge.
If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you.
Lisbon cleared her throat again, her voice straining as she spoke.
How could they doubt my intentions and my goals? This is what I've waited for, for so long. This is why I dedicated my life to this and only this. This is what my life had accumulated into. This moment.
I offered her my reason again. Why I had done what I'd done. I smiled comfortingly as our eyes meet for the first time since she'd witnessed my work.
Do you understand each of these rights I have explained to you?
But, for her, the end does not justify the means.
