POV Kendall

December 28th, the day where the suffering and pain started...

My mother and I were organizing a New Years' party. Since I love this holiday, I was, of course, ecstatic! I love seeing my family all together and I love playing with my friends and cousins, but, at the same time, I can not stop myself from feeling sad too, cause this holiday also reminds me of the fact that my dad is gone...

He was an amazing person, he was the one that taught me how to play hockey, which was his favorite sport. I remember that we used to play every day, right after I got back from school. He even played video games with me too. But, most importantly, he ALWAYS brought a smile to my Mom's face, he made everything in his power to make her happy. Unfortunately, he died from a car accident. I was very sad that day, it is very difficult for a five year old child to accept that your dad has passed away. But my mom told me that he was playing hockey, in the major league, in Heaven, which helped diminish the sadness I was feeling.

As the days passed, I missed him more and more. I wanted to play hockey with him and I missed the bedtime stories that he used to read to me... Back to December 28th, after I helped my mom with organizing everything for the party, I went back to my room to watch some cartoons while I waited for my cousins and friends to arrive. Not long after, I heard my door being opened by my mom.

She asked me to go downstairs with her for a moment because she had a surprise for me, she also told me that it was going to be something that would help me to not feel alone anymore. I smiled at that, already thinking about the possibility of it being a dog, since she knows that I ALWAYS wanted a dog. When I got down stairs, my smile fell, and my face, once cheerful and euphoric, turned into a sad and confused one.

That wrong that was...

The surprise was so not what I was expecting.

Standing in the middle of the room, was a tall man, thick beard, green eyes, brown hair and skin darker than mine. I noticed that he had an athletic body, even though most of it was covered by a big green coat.

My expression now was a confused and scared one. Who was this man? Why was he here? And, above all questions: Why could he not take away his eyes from my body?

If only had I known, in that moment, all the answers to my questions...

Maybe things would have been different...

I would not be having these nightmares every night...

But at the time I was only a child, an innocent soul that didn't know that evil existed and that about its power.

The guy ceased on devouring me with his eyes and came to the sofa, grabbed a box, all wrapped with some drawings of Superman, and smiled at me while my mom to where he was and hugged him.

"Kendall." - Mom called my attention. "He's Paul, your new dad. I hope you two get along well."

He approached me, bent down and gave me the gift.

"Hi, champion. Take it, it's for you. And don't worry, I know that we will have lots of fun." He said that with a mischievous smile on his face right before rising up and stirring my hair.

My life would never be the same...
