All was still inside the Gryffindor Common Room, the warm, crackling fire against the west wall the only sound permeating the room. The gold clock hanging on the wall read 11:57 pm - Christmas Eve. The few students who did not go home for the holidays were asleep upstairs in the dormitories. Sneaking quietly out the fifth year girls' dormitory, a young girl walked to the couch in front of the fire holding a brightly decorated gift. From the seventh year boys' dormitory came another Gryffindor. The girl on the couch smiled.
This Gryffindor, too, was holding a Christmas gift and smiled a lopsided grin as he handed it to her. Exchanging gifts, they sat together in comfortable silence on the velvet couch to open their presents. He opened his gift first. Inside lay a gold wristwatch and a small book. He laughed quietly; the book was entitled 101 Ways to Annoy Your Teachers. Similarly, the girl's gift held a small diamond-encrusted bracelet and another book. The girl's eyes went wide as she read the title; Hogwarts: An Updated History. Speechless, she threw her arms around his neck and kissed him on the cheek. His face matched his red hair.

Harry Potter awoke to the shouts of his friend, Ron Weasley, who seemed quite upset.
"Downstairs. . . . on the couch. . . ." Ron panted, "George . . . Hermione . . . ooo, Mom is so going to kill me!"
Harry just smiled.
